This hardworking locomotive has served several rosters with distinction. Here it's heading up a commuter train running from South Amboy, NJ to New York City. Originally built by the Pennsylvania's own Altoona Shops in January of 1939 as PRR GG1 #4873, it went to the Penn Central roster when PRR collapsed. From there, it was picked up by the NJDOT, then on to the NJT/NJTR roster. The last 13 GG1's in use with the NJT were finally retired on Octotber 29, 1983. #4873 was not preserved but instead scrapped which would have made one heck of a large pile!!! No location, exact day in September of 1981 or photographer was given for the color slide which is now in my collection. |

Standing next to a fellow E8A NJT loco is New Jersey Transit GG1 #4873. Although it didn't have the more colorful paint scheme as the E8A had, the GG1 unit had the power! The loco was built by GE and the PRR's own Altoona Shops in January of 1939 as PRR GG1 #4873. Its final years of service was in commuter service for the New Jersey Transit. On October 29, 1983, the last GG1 ran on the NJT system. #4873 was not preserved as several other GG1's were but instead sent to the scrapper's torch. No location, exact day in September of 1981 or photographer was given for the color slide which is now in my collection. The location does appear to be South Amboy, NJ. |

NJT Power. Here is an original 35mm color slide by Alan Miller that was taken on 26 September 1981. Prominent here is New Jersey Transit engine #4877, a GG-1 (2-C-C-2) electric built in Juniata as Pennsylvania Railroad #4877 during January of 1939, rated at 4,620 horsepower, later owned by Penn Central and Conrail, and presently on display at the United Railway Historical Society in Boonton, New Jersey. Doing a "run-around" next to the South Amboy station is New Jersey Transit GG1 #4873. It was built by the Pennsylvania's own Altoona Shops in January of 1939. After bouncing from PRR to PC, it was picked up by the New Jersey transist system who needed additional commuter train power. The loco and its 12 sisters purchased in 1980 served until being retired on October 29, 1983 after nearly 49 combined years of service. Still wearing the dark black shroud paint scheme, New Jersey Transit GG1 #4873 sails past Harrisonr, NJ. The GG1's at one time were the most powerful commuter locomotive built. Typical timetable speeds were 75-80 mph until October of 1967. Then some GG1's were allowed to run at 100 mph making it one of the premier early high speed locos in the US. This is an M.G. Lovis slide now in my collection. |
