| Standing next to a fellow E8A NJT loco is New Jersey Transit GG1 #4873. Although it didn't have the more colorful paint scheme as the E8A had, the GG1 unit had the power! The loco was built by GE and the PRR's own Altoona Shops in January of 1939 as PRR GG1 #4873. Its final years of service was in commuter service for the New Jersey Transit. On October 29, 1983, the last GG1 ran on the NJT system. #4873 was not preserved as several other GG1's were but instead sent to the scrapper's torch. No location, exact day in September of 1981 or photographer was given for the color slide which is now in my collection. The location does appear to be South Amboy, NJ. |
