ELDO Action. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad trains in the Eldorado section of Altoona, Pennsylvania, during January of 1966. Shown here are two PRR trains: the one on the left is sitting still, but the one on the right is moving. On the left (R to L) are PRR engines #9819 and #9537. Both locomotives were built by EMD and are rated at 1,500 horsepower. #9819 is an EF-15A built in 1951, while #9537 is an EF-15 built in 1948. On the right is PRR engine #9392, an ES-12 switcher built by EMD in 1950 and rated at 1,200 horsepower. It is pulling a local train from Altoona through Eldorado to the Hollidaysburg Yards. It is actually by-passing the line-haul train that is still waiting for permission to proceed.

The train is passing over the two-lane Sixth Avenue Extension near Canaan Station on its way to the Wye Switches, the New Portage Branch Line, the Gallitzin Tunnels, and points West. The Diesels, the truck, and the car were all built by GMC!

Once upon a time, there were four sets of tracks at this point ~ as evidenced by the wide signal bridge. This is also where an eastbound freight train that had lost its brakes coming down the New Portage Branch Line crashed into several waiting locomotives on Sunday, 06 November 1916.

PRR F3A #9545
Description:
Parked outside the two story brick station in Richmond, IN, this 1948 EMD built unit waits for its next orders. The brick station survived and is being restored to its glory days while this loco is long gone. The unit prime mover delivered 1500 hp. They're passing SLOPE Tower with a long string of hopper cars on their way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where the first two units will be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for their next assignment. This crew is just about ready to back the engines up and couple onto the train they'll pull out of the Yard. This photo was taken near the Yard Master's Office at the eastern end of South Juniata Street. Visible in the distance is the PRR's Samuel Rea Shop.

From here, this train will pass WYE Tower, climb the Allegheny Mountains using the New Portage Branch Line, and merge eventually with the mainline at Gallitzin.

Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of four Pennsylvania Railroad diesel electric locomotives that were built by four different manufacturers: #9552, #9702, #9627, and #9492. #9552 was built by GM-EMD as an EH-15 in December of 1948, rated at 1,500 horsepower, later converted to an EF-15A, and retired in August of 1964. #9702 is a BF-15A built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during May of 1950, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in February of 1965. #9627 is an AF-16 built by the American Locomotive Company during December of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in January of 1967.
