"What am I doing?!"
Title:  "What am I doing?!"
Description:  "What am I doing?" I asked myself as I grabbed this sub-standard shot of an eastbound BNSF freight heading down the old Great Northern with Minnesota's captiol city in the distance. Train had a CSX and an ex-Conrail unit up in front of that pure Santa Fe 'bonnet.

Title:  Won't Ever Tire Of This Vantage Point

First Of 2011!
Title:  First Of 2011!
Description:  My first catch of 2011 turned out to be this westbound freight crossing Pinto Drive as the hogger let 'em roll down the CP/Soo Paynesville sub beneath grey late winter skies. I was surprised to see the NS unit.

Looking up the Skally
Title:  Looking up the Skally
Description:  Amazingly the entire Skally line is intact in WBL itself, ending up in Hugo to the north and Maplewood to the south. Rest of the route in the eastern TC metro is without rails and now largely trails. Here, though, it is easy to imagine the glory days when not only NP but Milwaukee and C&NW trains graced these rails going to and from the Twin Ports.

WBL Depot
Title:  WBL Depot
Description:  Now in the midst of eastern Twin City suburbia, the former Northern Pacific/Burlington Northern station in White Bear Lake is still extant as a museum today. Trains even still pass by in the form of locals run by the Minnesota Commercial railway which leases the former NP "Skally" line in the foreground from the BNSF.

Now On Her Third Owner
Title:  Now On Her Third Owner
Description:  When it first graced these rails, 4507 wore the orange and black of the Milwaukee Road. Now this unit sports the CP "dual flag" scheme from the 1990's but is still at home. Could use a new coat of paint what with that "tag" junk on the long hood. Maybe CP could make her their Milwaukee Road "Heritage" unit?

Rotten Orange But Still Sweet
Title:  Rotten Orange But Still Sweet
Description:  "Bandit" Soo/Milwaukee 4512 and repainted sister 4507 is the duo at the fingertips of the hogger doing some switching at the southernmost end of Pigs Eye yard. My own nickname for these units is "rotten oranges", but ah they are fruit that still are sweet for the eyes. The closest I will ever come to having seen the Milwaukee in action beyond a museum.

The I & M
Title:  The I & M
Description:  When first built, this line stretched through rural countryside. Now look at what surrounds it: county roads, office buildings, you name it, it's suburbia. Nevertheless, this portion of Milwaukee Road predecessor Minnesota Central (not the same as the one which built from Red Wing to Mankato two decades after this MC) which later became the Milwaukee Road I & M division still sees trains thanks to being operated by Progressive Rail. We are looking south from the Yankee Doodle Road grade crossing.
