Caboose In The Lead!
Title:  Caboose In The Lead!
Description:  While waiting at the BNSF/CP crossover in St. Louis Park this day, I saw first one piece of MOW equipment, a BNSF truck (driving beside the tracks, not on them) and another piece of MOW equipment pass by me heading west. Which I was uninterested in photographing. When this MOW job appeared running west caboose-forward, though, it was time to break out the camera! The crewman lounging on the 11770 returned my friendly wave after I got my shot. I fondly remember these BN hacks from when I was a kid growing up in the 1980's. When they were last in use for revenue service before being bumped to locals and MOW duty.

Passing Over The Old Great Northern
Title:  Passing Over The Old Great Northern
Description:  The old MNS mainline bridge over the BNSF's former GN main is readily acessible from the Cedar Lake Trail (visible at the left bottom of this picture). Here the northbound 0630 job with the horsepower of two SOO 38-2's at the engineer's fingertips leads a short train of covered hoppers and boxcars.

Dual-Flags Crossing Excelsior Boulevard
Title:  Dual-Flags Crossing Excelsior Boulevard
Description:  An brace of 38-2's -one ex-Soo, the other ex-Soo/MILW back on home rails this day- cross Excelsior Boulevard pushing three full Soo hoppers full of ballast as the 0630 job makes an appearance on the old Milwaukee Road before returning to the old MNS mainline in St. Louis Park. Last I saw of them, the crew was pulling up onto the spur track across from the Depot Coffehouse on the Three Rivers trail where two empty Soo hoppers sat parked (along with a track scale car which has been there for weeks. Not coupled to any of the other freight cars that have been parked there.) The ballast was apparently for MOW work. All in all, this was a pleasant surprise catch. Note "Milwaukee Street" on the streelight. This street borders the ex-Milwuakee CP/TCW line from Exclesior Blved to down by the 169 overpass. Where it becomes another street going south.

Title:  Looking North
Description:  A panoramic shot of the UP/CP/PGR line in Rosemount with PGR 38 in the foreground. Green signal was for the northbound UP 3985. The tank car in the center is parked on a piece of track that once formed part of a connection to the long-gone Chicago Great Western mainline in Roseport but now only has a fragment in Rosemount surviving as a spur.

The Princess Depots Younger Sibling
Title:  The Princess Depots Younger Sibling
Description:  Here is Progressive Rail's snazzy new depot in Rosemount. It's design harkens back to that of the Princess Depot in Minneapolis' Minnehaha Park. The railroader in the orange vest was there to make sure nobody strayed onto the tracks when the northbound UP 3985 passed through. (For shots of the 3985 here, see my album entitled "Steam Trains").

Title:  Proud Partner
Description:  Snazzy PGR 38 sits shut off down by the PGR depot in Rosemount. Sporting a sign that proudly touts PGR's partnership with Canadian Pacific. The PGR operates the former Milwaukee "Eagandale" line. Which once connected to downtown St. Paul as part of the I&M division but now is truncated at 494 in Eagan. With a rail trail on the rest of the route.

Passing Trains
Title:  Passing Trains
Description:  This eastbound coal job had been stopped for about an hour on the main track in Long Lake waiting for the westbound general freight on the right to arrive. Finally, the hogger on the coal job was able to coax momentum into his train once again when the meet finally occured and continued on into Minneapolis with their load of Wyoming coal.

Title:  The Faded Emblem

First Catch Of 2009!!!!
Title:  First Catch Of 2009!!!!
Description:  Here is a westbound BNSF general freight thundering through Long Lake on a delightful unseaonally mild last day of January. For power, the crew has a quartet of GE's at their disposal. Note the traffic flowing east and west along the finally opened Highway 12 bypass which parallels the BNSF from the western border of Wayzata to the outskirts of Maple Plain. Catching this train marks the start of the 2009 railfan season for me.

ES44's Waitin'
Title:  ES44's Waitin'
Description:  Stopped by red signals, the unseen crew of a westbound general freight waits patiently beneath gloomy March skies with a brace of ES44ACs for power. Since the highway 12 bypass (i.e. "new 12") is now open, I had to hang back by the fence at an emergency access gate to get this shot in a gap between traffic passing east to west. While doing so, the Doobie Brothers tune "Long Train Runnin'" was chugging along on my MP3 player. Get down, man.

Rolling By Where There Were Many Tracks Once Upon A Time
Title:  Rolling By Where There Were Many Tracks Once Upon A Time
Description:  The returning St. Paul Turn lesuirely rolls along at 10 MPH past where, on the left, was once solid tracks in the M&ST.L's Kenwood yard. Today a trail is what occupies most of the site save for a sole surviving mainline track. Making for easy railfanning on public property once privately owned by the Louie and, later, the Chicago and North Western. Interesting to relate: When the Minnesota Valley Railway once interchanged with the Soo and the CNW in this area, their motive power laid over on a now-gone siding in this location awaiting the arrival of the CNW with their portion of the interchange. Shame that short line is now gone. Would loved to have seen that.

Smoke It Up!
Title:  Smoke It Up!
Description:  Boy were the crew of the 9679 blowing the carbon out but good! Away their MAC duo goes. Having passed beneath Brown Road and now charging for the Williow Drive underpass at the Long Lake/Orono border. Meanwhile, traffic on the Highway 12 bypass flows on oblivious to the good show on the tracks.

Smokey MAC's
Title:  Smokey MAC's
Description:  Making enough smoke to make a steam engine proud, the pair of MAC's at the head end of this empty westbound coal job on the Wayzata sub is about to duck under Brown Road. Even without it's BN herald the Grinstien Green paint on the 9679 still looks good even today. Over ten years after the BN/ATSF merger.

Charging For Wayzata
Title:  Charging For Wayzata
Description:  Away goes this Norfolk Southern trio. Racing for the Luce Line trail bridge and the Wayzata/Long Lake border. Behind the NS 2591 are a pair of plaine-jane NS SD70s. On days like these you'd think you were east of Chicago on the old Conrail lines rather than in the Gopher State, which is just fine by this railfan. Why go to the railroad when the railroad can come to you, hey?

Norfolk Southern Thunder!
Title:  Norfolk Southern Thunder!
Description:  The sound of crickets and frogs anticipating the potential for rain and the noise of traffic on the Highway 12 bypass is suddenly shattered in dramatic fashion by this train on a gorgeous summer-like April afternoon. The crew of this eastbound mixed freight have themselves a trio of NS units for power with SD70M 2591 as the lead unit. Here they are splitting the signals in Long Lake as they race for Wayzata.
