There were two groups of power initially, from GATX and PLM(Precision Leasing Management). The PLM units were in this attractive blue scheme, and became known as "plums" to the local fans. Conrail was not shy about making the D&H wait on the Tier, but occasionally practicality and common sense won out. Today is one of those days, as BUME rolls 49 cars through West BD on track 2, headed for East Binghamton, while an XCL empty coal train cools its heels on the former DLW, having come out track 3 from downtown with 35 hoppers for Clearfield PA. That's the Vestal Spur in the lower right corner, the remaining portion of what was the DLW's 70 MPH main line. It now runs a few miles out to Vestal to serve the few remaining local customers. |

A train is rolling...with apologies to the Eagles. The big game in town that day was a BUAB with NYSW and SOO power. It was over at QD downtown, waiting on a new crew. While we all milled around contemplating our chase, the radio announced that a BUME was about to go north out of East Binghamton. Getting out of the yard is a slow process, and I was able to get to BD ahead of the train, shooting its two recently arrived PLM units. |
