BNSF 6606
Title:  BNSF 6606
Description:  Twelve miles east of Bakersfield, California, is Sandcut. While the mainline has been steadily climbing for most of those 12 miles, Sandcut has the first curve and is generally considered the beginning of the climb over the Tehachapi Mountains. Constructed by Southern Pacific, the line is now owned by Union Pacific. However, most trains crossing the Tehachapis are BNSF Railway trains (formerly Santa Fe), as typified by train Z-FRSCHI1-12A (Priority UPS - LTL Intermodal; Fresno CA to Chicago IL) with ES44C4 6606 on the head end. Ahead lies the famed Tehachapi Loop, in which the tracks loop over themselves in order to gain elevation.

BNSF 6607
Title:  BNSF 6607
Description:  While waiting for the mile-long Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus train, a passenger train that could not be much shorter appeared heading the other direction! BNSF ES44C4 6607 was on the point of train U-NEEBAK5-12Z (Needles to Bakersfield) consisting of just two cars: BNSF 81 (a track measurement car, the former ATSF 63 built by ACF in 1950) and BNSF 80 "Rio Grande River" (a "theatre" car rebuilt from BNSF 43, which was originally built as Southern Pacific bi-level gallery commuter coach 3700 by P-S in 1955). Shortly after passing, this two-car westbound met the 59-car eastbound circus train somewhere between Mojave and Tehachapi – that must’ve been quite a contrast.

Title:  BNSF 7315
Description:  Stretching out for a mile, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus (red unit) train has been steadily climbing the grade out of Bakersfield for 12 miles on its approach to the crossing of the Tehachapi Mountains. Seen here at Sandcut, the 59-car train (34 coaches, 18 flats, 4 stock cars, 2 COFC and 1 bi-level auto rack) weighs 4290 tons and, without power, is 5235 feet in length. Power for the train (symboled as BNSF train U-FRSSDG1-12A) consists of BNSF ES44DCs 7315, 7646 and 7216, which will lift the train up to the 4000’ summit at the town of Tehachapi, then on to Barstow, across Cajon Pass and down the Pacific Coast to San Diego – a trip of about 460 miles from its origination point of Fresno (in California's Central Valley).

AMTK 90230
Title:  AMTK 90230
Description:  Each July, the horse racing season comes to San Diego Countys Del Mar Racetrack. And with it, increased ridership on Amtraks Surf Line, and to handle the increased crowds one train set of older cars is placed into service between Los Angeles and San Diego (in order to allow one train set of Pacific Surfliner cars to be broken up to lengthen other trains on the line). In 2011, former F40PH-turned-cab car 90230 (originally Amtrak 230), painted in the Pacific Northwests attractive Cascades scheme, traveled south to lend an assist. Northbound Amtrak Pacific Surfliner #583, running nearly forty minutes late (due, in large part, to longer station stops necessitated by the older cars), zips through the Metrolink station in Orange, California, on July 21, 2011.

Description:  During the Del Mar Race Season, Amtraks "Pacific Surfliner" trains become a bit more interesting as one train set is made up of older equipment (in order break up one standard high-level train set in order to extend the other train sets). On July 29th, 2011, train 582 departs Fullerton, California, on its way from Los Angeles to San Diego, with F59PHI 464 on the headend, a consist of Horizon and Amfleet cars, an old "Heritage" baggage car and Dash 8-32BWH 503 on the rear. Its a nice break from the usual "Pacific Surfliner" cars for those watching trackside, but I suspect that the passengers would rather have the newer - and nicer - "Surfliner" cars in which to ride.

Description:  Metrolink train 708 (Los Angeles to Riverside) makes its station stop on track 3 (the south main) at Fullerton, California, on July 29, 2011. Meanwhile, a mysterious Metrolink train, with Hyundai-Rotem cab car 638 on the rear, waits on track 2 (the middle main), which has no passenger access. (The destination boards on the cars indicated the train was headed from Los Angeles to the Antelope Valley!) No problems, though, as this train is empty save for two crewmen in the diesels cab and a crewman riding in the engineers seat in the cab car. The mystery train headed east, following train 708, but returned about five minutes later - on the same mainline - heading west. (A northbound/westbound Metrolink train was reportedly having problems in nearby Anaheim, and we assumed that train was heading there to pick up the passengers, but that was not the case.)

Amtrak's "Southwest Chief"
Title:  Amtrak's "Southwest Chief"
Description:  Upon train #4s 15-minute late arrival in Fullerton, California, Amtrak Conductor Moncada surveys a large group of Japanese tourists (headed to New Mexico) with their own food supply. This coach wouldnt do, so the train was pulled ahead two additional car lengths so that the group could ride in a Superliner Coach/Baggage. The passengers formed a "bucket brigade" to quickly and efficiently stow their provisions (much more quickly than I had expected them to). Throughout, Conductor Moncada exhibited patience, professionalism and a positive attitude and the eastbound “Southwest Chief” departed not too far behind schedule.

LAMTA 142
Title:  LAMTA 142
Description:  A Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority train rounds the curve at 1st Street and Pine Avenue in downtown Long Beach as it begins its trip to 7th Street / Metro Center near downtown Los Angeles. This is the MTAs "Blue Line," the first line built in MTAs light rail system, opening in 1990. For the most part, the "Blue Line follows the last operating Pacific Electric line - the PEs Long Beach line ceased operations in April 1961 (and I am an old enough codger that I remember riding it!).
