No Trespassing - Swarthout Road, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/13/10
Title:  No Trespassing - Swarthout Road, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/13/10
Description:  There always seem to be cars with families enjoying the mountains where Swarthout Road crosses the BNSF Railway mainline in the Blue Cut area of Cajon Pass. Perhaps that is why the railroad has stenciled their "no trespassing" warning directly on the rails, about every twenty feet, in this area. Also evident (on the inside of the opposite rail) is a heavy coating of grease, which reduces wear on the railhead and wheel flanges on this curvy crossing of the mountains.

AMTK 461 - Fullerton, CA - 12/21/10
Title:  AMTK 461 - Fullerton, CA - 12/21/10
Description:  Running about a half-hour late, San Luis Obispo-bound Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" #775 departs the station in Fullerton, California, on a rainy December 21, 2010. (This was the fifth of six consecutive days of nearly non-stop rain in southern California.) On the middle-main sits BNSF Railway train S-LHACLO1-21A, waiting for a clear signal after being held so that the passenger train could cross in front of him. The crew on the freight used this break to dodge the raindrops and scurry to the cafe in the station (in the lower right) for some warm coffee while they wait for their clear signal indication.

SCAX 882 - Orange, CA - 12/23/10
Title:  SCAX 882 - Orange, CA - 12/23/10
Description:  Metrolink train 602 (Los Angeles - Oceanside) makes a stop in Orange, California, two days before Christmas 2010. Orange is a busy station on the Metrolink system, as it serves both the Los Angeles to Oceanside line and the San Bernardino / Riverside to Oceanside line - these routes diverge just north of the former Santa Fe station. Many passengers change from one route to the other here, and trains are frequent (about every 10 minutes) in the mornings and afternoons. Amtraks "Pacific Surfliners" also pass through, but only two trains each way stop here. Each weekday, 33 Metrolink and 24 Amtrak trains pass through, along with a pair of Union Pacific and a pair of BNSF Railway freights most days. That's 57 passenger trains per day!

UP 3111 - West Colton Yard, Bloomington, CA - 2/12/11
Title:  UP 3111 - West Colton Yard, Bloomington, CA - 2/12/11
Description:  Mainline railroading in the west is generally a non-stop parade of wide-nosed diesels, so it is refreshing to find older hood units - even if they are in yard service. Here we see a trio of Union Pacific EMD 6-motor power at the West Colton Yard in Bloomington, California, on February 12, 2011. This set, which spend their days shunting cars in the yard to make up trains for UP’s far-flung system, consists of engines that the Union Pacific acquired from other railroads, either through purchase or merger. UP SD40-2 3111 is ex-UP 3943, originally Missouri Pacific 6043. It is teamed with SD38-2 Y835 (ex-Southern Pacific 2976) and Y824 (ex-UP 2824, nee-McCloud 39).

WAMX 3514 - Ontario, CA - 2/12/11
Title:  WAMX 3514 - Ontario, CA - 2/12/11
Description:  Webb Asset Management GP35 3514 is back on the rails, a bit worse for the wear. On February 7th, the engine was involved in a collision with the Watco SW1500 that also switches (with WAMX 3514) the Ventura Foods Warehouse. Still lettered for previous owner Palouse River & Coulee City, the engine was originally Pennsylvania Railroad 2268. While the damage is not all the extensive but, at over 46 years old, I suspect that this engine has turned its last wheel in revenue service.

Title:  AMTK 145 - Los Angeles, CA - 2/20/11
Description:  Amtrak train #1, the "Sunset Limited," completes mile 1995 (the final mile) of its journey from New Orleans to Los Angeles. On the point of the “Sunset” this morning is Amtrak P42DC 145, the first of several engines to be painted in special schemes to commemorate Amtrak’s 40th anniversary in 2011. The nine-car train began its journey west from LA (Louisiana) just before Noon on February 18th and is arriving in L.A. (Los Angeles) on a bright February 20th morning at 7:47 – about 45 minutes ahead of its (heavily padded) schedule. The pilot of 145 shows signs of an altercation with an automobile earlier in the trip, near San Antonio, Texas.

Description:  Two Amtrak anniversary engines in one place! Amtrak P42 145, the first of several engines painted in "retro" schemes to celebrate the passenger carriers 40th anniversary in 2011, has just arrived in Los Angeles on its first trip to the west (on train #1, the "Sunset Limited"). On the adjacent "escape" track sits Amtrak F59PHI 457, wearing a special scheme to commemorate the "Pacific Surfliner" services 10th anniversary in 2010. Note only is this an unusual view of the 457s rear, but also note the damage to the pilot on 145, the result of a grade crossing accident in San Antonio the previous day.

BNSF 4106 - Monolith, CA - 3/11/11
Title:  BNSF 4106 - Monolith, CA - 3/11/11
Description:  BNSF train M-RICBAR1-09A (Richmond CA - Barstow CA merchandise) rounds the curve at the east end of Monolith as it descends from Tehachapi headed to Mojave, at which point it will split off from Union Pacific rails back onto BNSF trackage to complete the journey to Barstow. A small hole in the fog allows the train to be bathed in sunshine, although it is just about to re-enter the gloom once again.

Title:  BNSF 4106 - Tehachapi, CA - 3/11/11
Description:  As fog envelops the town of Tehachapi, BNSF train M-RICBAR1-09A (Richmond CA - Barstow CA merchandise) rolls to a stop near the summit of the crossing of the Tehachapi Mountains. Celebrating the towns railroad heritage, attractive signs with SP "Black Widow" F-units direct those exiting the freeway to downtown. Note the unusual radio antenna on the cab roof (this is one of two matching antennas on the unit.)

BNSF 7681 - Bakersfield, CA - 3/13/11
Title:  BNSF 7681 - Bakersfield, CA - 3/13/11
Description:  As BNSF Railway train Z-KCKNBY1-11A (Priority UPS-LTL Intermodal, Kansas City KS to North Bay CA) arrives in Bakersfield the headlight of Union Pacific train ZLCLT 13 (UPS Expedited Intermodal, Los Angeles CA to Lathrop CA, with UP ES44AC 5383 on the head-end) can be seen in the distance. Both trains have just conquered the crossing of the Tehachapi Mountains, and will now have it easy as they head north through Californias flat Central Valley. It appears that the lead ES44DC, 7681, has had a nose job that could use a bit more paint.

BNSF 7659 - Fullerton, CA - 3/26/11
Title:  BNSF 7659 - Fullerton, CA - 3/26/11
Description:  The trackwork in Fullerton, California, has gotten more complex! Along with the triple track mainline (which ends here, with the left main continuing on to Chicago, and the right main heading south to San Diego, with the middle main splitting to each), there is a new track on the far right for the upcoming Metrolink service between Fullerton and Laguna Niguel / Mission Viejo. This stub end track, complete with a short passing siding, joins the line to San Diego about a quarter mile after rounding this curve. BNSF Railway train S-MEMSCO1-18A (Intermodal Stacks; Memphis TN to Thenard CA) crosses to the northern-most main on its way to the harbor area in Long Beach / Los Angeles, on March 25, 2011.

BNSF 9615 - Fullerton, CA - 3/26/11
Title:  BNSF 9615 - Fullerton, CA - 3/26/11
Description:  Amtrak #3, the westbound "Southwest Chief," accelerates out of the Fullerton station at 4:05 PM on March 26, 2011. The scheduled time for this stop? 6:34 AM! As evidenced by the BNSF SD70MAC on the headend, this has been a hard-luck train on its journey from Chicago to Los Angeles - a misbehaving P42DC (hence its replacement with the SD70MAC), signal problems, slow orders - Unfortunately not the ideal situation for repeat customers among the trains many passengers.

BNSF 9615 - Fullerton Junction, Fullerton, CA - 3/26/11
Title:  BNSF 9615 - Fullerton Junction, Fullerton, CA - 3/26/11
Description:  Running 9 hours 20 minutes late as it approaches it next to last stop in Fullerton, California, Amtrak train #3 (the westbound "Southwest Chief") has had a number of setbacks on its journey from Chicago to Los Angeles. Among the problems was the addition of BNSF SD70MAC 9615 in La Junta, Colorado, because of ailing Amtrak P42DC 45 developed problems, along with slow orders through Kansas and Colorado due to signal problems (reportedly copper theft), and then setting out unit 45 in Albuqueque, New Mexico. The train was running so late at this point that a crew change was scheduled for Fullerton, with the new crew taking the train the final twenty-six miles into Los Angeles.

BNSF 7219 - Fullerton, CA - 3/28/11
Title:  BNSF 7219 - Fullerton, CA - 3/28/11
Description:  It can be a madhouse on weekday afternoons in Fullerton, California, as there are nineteen passenger train movements (Amtrak and Metrolink) between 2:59 and 7:04 PM. And, of course, the BNSF Railway is trying to move freight among all these trains, so the BNSFs dispatchers are kept very busy. On the afternoon of Monday, March 28th, 2011, BNSF train Z-WSPLAC1-26A (behind GEs 7219, 7838, 5070 and 7576) blasts through the station on the middle main, heading to Los Angeles from Willow Springs, Illinois.

SCAX 896 - Fullerton, CA - 3/28/11
Title:  SCAX 896 - Fullerton, CA - 3/28/11
Description:  Southern California's Metrolink commuter train service has been in operation since 1991, and at rush hour the stations become a sea of humanity - imagine that; not everyone is stuck on the freeway! Fullerton, not far from Disneyland, sees Metrolink service between Los Angeles and southern points (Irvine, Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo and Oceanside) and cities to the east (Riverside) as well. Here train 706 (a Los Angeles to Riverside train) disgorges passengers at the venerable old Santa Fe station (built in 1930) right on time. In moments, the train will depart and, at the end of the platform, switch to the middle main, as the track it is on heads south to Oceanside (and eventually San Diego) rather than east to Riverside (and Chicago).

UP 3790 - Dolores Yard, Carson, CA - 3/29/11
Title:  UP 3790 - Dolores Yard, Carson, CA - 3/29/11
Description:  At the north end of Union Pacific's Dolores Yard is CP Alameda, where some of the power lays over awaiting assignment. Unlike southern California's other railroad, BNSF Railway (which operates a steady stream of GE power in the area), EMD power is no stranger to the Union Pacific in the L.A. Basin. Here we see SD70M 3790 and SD90MAC 8200 resting between runs on March 29, 2011. (The UP calls these SD90MACs "SD9043AC" rather than sticking with the EMD designation.)

AMTK 156 - Sullivan's Curve, Cajon Pass, CA - 4/2/11
Title:  AMTK 156 - Sullivan's Curve, Cajon Pass, CA - 4/2/11
Description:  The Pacific Railroad Society's 75th Anniversary special (symboled AMT966-02), heading from Los Angeles to Bakersfield via the former SP Palmdale Cutoff (over Cajon Pass) and the line over the Tehachapi Mountains, rounds Sullivan's Curve as it ascends Cajon Pass on April 2, 2011. In a classy move by Amtrak, P42DC 156, fresh in its Heritage paint scheme to commemorate the carriers 40th Anniversary, is on the point, followed by Amtrak B32-8BWH 510.

AMTK 156 - West Colton Yard, Bloomington, CA - 4/2/11
Title:  AMTK 156 - West Colton Yard, Bloomington, CA - 4/2/11
Description:  The railfans assembled on the Pepper Street overpass at Union Pacific's West Colton Yards east end get a friendly wave from the cab of Amtrak P42DC 156 as it leads a special train toward Cajon Pass and, eventually, Tehachapi and Bakersfield. In a nice touch of class, Amtrak sent one of their Fortieth Anniversary Heritage units (the 156) west to lead the Pacific Railroad Society’s 75th Anniversary special. (The second engine in the consist is Amtrak Dash 8-32BWH 510.)
