SDP40F's weren't regularly used on the PANAMA LIMITED until June 1974, when new units 612-619 were assigned to the train; but at least three units from the original order (500-539) showed up when they were new in 1973. The first was the 514, which came in on 9 July 1973; followed by the 528 on 17 September and the 529 the next day. Here is the 529, along with E8A 205, on 19 Spetember; ready for this afternoon's northbound train to Chicago. Even though the locomotive is less than two months old, almost all of the black paint has peeled off of the pilot and fuel tank. This was a common occurance on units 500-539. |

At 3:15 on a Sunday afternoon Illinois Central Gulf E9A 2039, E8B 4105 and E9A 4038 were at the sand tower at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, and in 15 minutes they would back into the station and onto the northbound PANAMA LIMITED. The B-unit was still lettered ILLINOIS CENTRAL, while the cab units were two of at least six ICG E-units painted in Amtrak colors while on lease to the passenger carrier. The 2039 was originally Florida East Coast 1034, and was one of five ex-FEC E9A's (1031-1035) acquired from Precision National Corp. in 1969. These units were IC(G) 2036-2040 and were easily-recognizable by their flat F-unit type number boxes. |

Amtrak 1917 was at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal on New Year's Day 1976, having just arrived on the PANAMA LIMITED. It was one of six heater cars rebuilt from Amtrak E-units by the Illinois Central Gulf at its Paducah Shops between December 1975 and February 1976. The 1917 was photographed on what may have been its very first run. When new, all of these were regularly used on the PANAMA LIMITED; which still had steam-heated cars but was being powered by new P30CH units (as well as SDP40F's).Originally given 4-digit car numbers 1916-1921, they received 3-digit locomotive numbers 667-671 in July 1977. This was done to address a union complaint that road crews were improperly moving cars within terminals. Inbound trains crews would bring the heater cars out to the engine terminal to be serviced with their road power, and outbound crews would bring them back into the station. Under the union agreement only yard crews could move cars within terminals, and the union said that the 4-digit numbers proved that Amtrak considered these cars; so the railroad solved the problem by giving them 3-digit locomotive numbers! The 1917 was built in October 1955 as Union Pacific E9B 971B, was leased to Amtrak as the 1469 in May 1972, and sold to Amtrak at the 469 in August 1972. Amtrak retired it in 1983 and sold it to Golden Arrow Line Tours. |

For the inauguration of Jimmy Carter as president on 20 January 1977, the Carter Campaign Committee chartered an 18-car train to bring supporters from Plains, Georgia to Washington and back. Even though the official trip originated and terminated at Plains, the train was assembled at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal and dead-headed to Plains and back via the Louisville & Nashville and Seaboard Coast Line. Here is the train about 20 minutes after leaving NOUPT, stopped at the L&N's Gentilly Yard in eastern New Orleans. The water was being drained out of the locomotives' internal water tanks because of concern about the units' weight and the water sloshing around.The PEANUT SPECIAL consisted of SDP40Fs 582, 595 and 588 with coaches 5404, 5475 and 5442; 11-bedroom sleepers 2252 STAR LEAF, 2263 PLACID LAKE and 2203 SILVER SWAN; 10-6 sleeper 2638 PACIFIC TRAIL, lounge 3409, dining room car 8800, kitchen-dormitory 8801, sleeper-lounge 3205 GULF STREAM, 11-bedroom cars 2201 SILVER QUAIL, 2250 STAR BAY, 2215 INDIAN MAID, 2211 INDIAN DRUM and 2214 INDIAN LAKE; and 10-6 sleepers 2626 PACIFIC PLATEAU and 2618 PACIFIC LODGE. |

The brutally-cold weather in January 1977 took a significant portion of Amtrak's steam-heated equipment out of service with freeze damage, and the carrier responded by cancelling several long-distance trains including the PANAMA LIMITED. After an absence of about two weeks the PANAMA was reinstated as an all-coach Amfleet train, and here is the first example backing into New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The railroad was finally able to add a PACIFIC-series 10-6 sleeper at the end of the year, restoring First Class service to the train. |

| Description: |
This locomotive was built as Pennsylvania Railroad 5809 and was subsequently renumbered Penn Central 4309 before becoming Amtrak 315. It received a Head End Power generator at Altoona in September 1974 and was renumbered 498 in November 1975, when all of the remaining E-units were put into the 400-series. In 1983 it was traded to Conrail for a pair of SW8's and became CR 4020. When CR was broken up, it was assigned Norfolk Southern 1000; but was sold and regained its original number as Juniata Terminal 5809. |

Amtrak train No. 58 – the northbound PANAMA LIMITED – was about to pass under Jefferson Davis (now Norman C. Francis) Parkway on New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal track, and this image illustrates what Amtrak trains looked like when all of the equipment was in a matching paint scheme! No. 58 consisted of P30CH 722 and nine cars: baggage car 1214, 10-6 sleeper 2900 PACIFIC BAY, dinette 20225, 60-seat coaches 21883, 21876, 21886 and 21888, cafe 20048 and 84-seat coach 21234. |

The piece of equipment was built as Baltimore & Ohio E9 number 34 in 1955, and was subsequently B&O 1454 and Amtrak 400. In the late 1970's, Amtrak gutted the unit and installed the water tanks from four retired SDP40F's, creating a 9300-gallon fuel tender. It was tried on different trains, but wasn't widely used; and is shown here stored at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. |

| Description: |
Just 10 days after Amtrak took over operation of the CRESCENT, train 20 was making its station stop at Meridian. The trains cosisted of E8A's 6909, 6913 and 6905 and nine cars: baggage-dormitory car 1406, coaches 817, 5285 and 844, coach-lounge 3850, diner 8382, and 10-6 sleepers 2002 DAN RIVER, 2860 TYE RIVER and 2862 FRENCH BROAD RIVER. Except for the Amtrak baggage-dormitory car and the ex-Southern coach-lounge, the train looks much as it did when it was the SOUTHERN CRESCENT. Cars 5285, 3850, 8382, 2860 and 2862 were lettered SOUTHERN but wore Amtrak numbers, while car 817, 844 and 2002 still had their Southern lettering and numbers. |

| Description: |
Amtrak 441 was one of about a dozen E-units that were stored at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. Within a few months, all but one were sold to Precision National Corp. and scrapped here. The 441 was built as Louisville & Nashville E8A 794 in May 1951 and it still wore the F-unit number boxes which the L&N had added. It was renumbered Amtrak 224, rebuilt to E9 specifications in June 1974, and renumbered 441 in November 1975 to make room for F40's. When photographed here it was one month shy of its 30th birthday. |

This auction eliminated almost all of Amtrak's remaining E-units, which were purchased by the Precision National Corp. and then scrapped for their prime movers. On the near track were the 473, 471, 408, 421, 368, 419 (the last E-unit ever built) and 436; while the 426 and 441 were on the left. Other units here included the 411, 422 and 464. |
