Abosulutely beautiful and iconic shot of the massive B&O 2-8-8-4 #7626 in action heading up a long drag of freight cars. Built by Baldwin in July of 1945 (serial #71508), the loco served the B&O well. However technology was against this massive loco - diesels soon took over the roster and slowly pushed these massive brutes over the edge. The loco was first renumbered in February of 1957 BO 676 to make room on the roster for new diesels. Then the scrapper's torch ended its career in 1960 after barely 15 years of service. Specs - EM-1 class, 64" drivers, impressive 235 psi boiler pressure, four 24x32" cylinders, massive engine weight of 628,700 lb, impressive tractive effort of 115,000 lb. Beautiful action shot taken by an unknown photographer of the massive B&O 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type locomotive #7600. This was the first of 30 massive Yellowstones built by Baldwin although the B&O had wanted diesels instead. The War Production Board restricted diesel building so these were built instead. The loco was renumbered in 1956 to BO 650 and retired in 1960. Specs - EM-1 class, 64" drivers, impressive 235 psi boiler pressure, four 24x32" cylinders, massive engine weight of 628,700 lb, impressive tractive effort of 115,000 lb. Massive and powerful are the two adjectives for this 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type steam locomtoive built by Baldwin in 1944 as BO #7601 (serial #70063). The impressive loco sereved quite successfully until dieselization hit the roster. Even then, they were occasionally pulled back into action, even to head up a few passenger trains! What a sight that would have been! The loco was renumbered in 1956 to BO 651 and dropped from the roster in 1960. No photographer was listed for this photo. |

Although not wanted by the B&O at first (diesels were their first choice), the War Production Board restricted them to ordering steam locomotives instead. Built by Baldwin in 1944, B&O 2-8-8-4 #7603 filled the need for power quite well. Quite an impressive piece of power in this Baltimore & Ohio 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type steam locomotive #7618. Built by Baldwin in 1944 (serial #70080). the loco was fit to handle long drags of coal and freight cars in the Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Vriginia and Ohio areas. Near the end of its life in 1956, it was renumbered to BO 668 in 1956 to make room for new diesels on the roster. The beautiful machine was scrapped in 1960. Built by Baldwin in June of 1945 as BO #7621 (serial #71503), it proved to be up to the task of handling long drags of coal and freight cars especially in the Cumberland area. The loco was eventually pushed to the side of the roster starting with its renumbered in 1956 to BO #671 and then dropped from the roster completely in 1960. Built by Baldwin near the end of their steam loco production was this B&O 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone type steam locootive #7623 (serial #71505) in June of 1945. It was powerful and reliable even though the B&O had wanted diesels instead but were fored by the War Production Board to take these locos. It was powerful enought to pull long drags of coal and freight cars and yet nimble enough to fill in a few times for passenger service. The loco was renumbered in 1956 to BO 673 to make room for new diesels. The final straw was being dropped from the roster in 1960 and scrapped. No date, location or photographer was listed for this nice view of a once powerful and massive locomotive. |
