GN 0-6-0 #27 - Great Northern Builder's Photo
Title:  GN 0-6-0 #27 - Great Northern Builder's Photo
Description:  This appears to be a builtder's photo of Great Northern 0-6-0 #27 at the Brooks Locomotive Works in Dunkirk, NY in 1882. RRPA data base would not accept the 1882 build date. This was a few decades before Brooks would join the ALCO group. It was originally built as St Paul, Minneapolis & Manitoba #194 in 1882 but renumbered GN #194 in 1892. It was renumbered again to GN @27 in November of 1899. After a combined 34 years of service, the loco was scrapped in September of 1916. Original specs - 48" drivers (reblt to 49"), modest 140 psi boiler pressure, 17x24" cylinders, modest engine weight of 67,050 lb, modest tractive effort of 16,840 lb. The loco was a class A-4.

GN 2-10-2 #2100 - Great Northern
Title:  GN 2-10-2 #2100 - Great Northern
Description:  Beautiful 1923 Baldwin builder's photo of the first of 45 2-10-2 Santa Fe type locomotives that were on the Great Northern roster. Specifics - Q-1, 63" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, 31x32" cylinders, engine weight of 428,340 lb, impressive tractive effort of 87,131 lb. According to Steamlocomotive.com " Big engines in every respect, these Santa Fes had the Belpaire firebox beloved by the Great Northern, 15" (381 mm) piston valves, and lots of weight on the drivers. Their tube & flues had large diameters and the 60 superheater flues were among the most in any boiler. A smallish grate area meant much less to an oil-fired class and they had few rivals in the adhesion weight they could throw into hauling a train. They were rated at 3,000 tons of trailing load (75 cars) over the mountainous Montana profile between Whitefish and Cutbank. Most were oil burners as shown in the specs. Delivered with 370 sq ft of heating surface and 5,499 sq ft total, the class later added 39 sq ft of arch tubes and a trailing-truck booster developing 12,200 lb." After 27 years of hard service, this locomotive was scrapped in 1950.

Specs D-2 class, 55" drivers, modest 150 psi boiler pressure, 19x24" cylinders, small engine weight of 99,800 lb, modest tractive effort of 20,085 lb. The entire class of 60 locomotives was retired by 1926.

GN 2-8-2 #3369 - Great Northern
Title:  GN 2-8-2 #3369 - Great Northern
Description:  Left with a large number of 2-6-6-2 that had been replaced by stronger models in 1925-26, the Great Nothern shops cut, whittlled, and reshaped these massive locos into beefy 2-8-2 Mikados like this GN #3369. The new group of Mikados were reclassified as O-6 members. They were rebuilt again into class O-8 specs between 1944-46 and renumbered #3394. Retired in mid-1950's and all were scrapped by the early 1960's. The date of 1939 was given but from the photo, it appears to be missing its main rod so it may be several years before it was rebuilt to O-8 class specs.Unknown photographer.

Title:  GN 4-8-2 #2513 - Great Northern
Description:  Beautiful example of the 1923 Baldwin built "Mountain" type steam locomotive. According to several sources, the Class P-2 "Mountains" did an excellent job in passenger service. They were eventually replaced by the S-2 Northerns in Empire Builder service. The P-2 class locomotives were then used in freight service and were retired in 1955. These were successful passenger-haulers and were considered by many to have the best-looking Great Northern engine class. Specs - class P-2, oil burner, 73" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 29x28" cylinders, engine weight of 357,000 lb, tractive effort of 54,838 lb. Date is approximate. Robert Graham photo
