BNSF 6642 - Kansas City, KS - 9/19/10
Title:  BNSF 6642 - Kansas City, KS - 9/19/10
Description:  A pair of interesting diesels are on BNSF Railways H-GALKCK2-19A (Galesburg IL to Kansas City KS) - Brand-new ES44C4 6642 is on the point, and also new 3GS21C 1305 heading west to, eventually, California. General Electrics ES44C4s are, at this date, unique to the BNSF and feature four, rather than six, traction motors. The center axle of each truck is unpowered, so these locomotives have an A1A-A1A wheel arrangement (just like an E-unit). But, unlike E-units, these feature a variable traction control system in their computer systems and, with the center axle capable of being raised off the rail slightly to maintain sufficient adhesion by varying the weight on the drive axles. Switch engine 1305, built by National Railway Equipment (of Mount Vernon, IL), is a low-emissions diesel road switcher locomotive that has low-emissions to keep air clean in southern California. It is powered by three Cummins QSK19C I6 engines with each one developing 700 horsepower and creating a total power output of 2,100 horsepower.

BNSF 6387 - Summit, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/6/10
Title:  BNSF 6387 - Summit, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/6/10
Description:  General Electric ES44DCs are borincly common in southern California, so even though the ES44AC on the point of train S-LBPLPC1-05A looks pretty much identical, it is still cause for interest when an ES44AC shhws up this far west. (How pathetic is that? Oh, for the days of wider motive power variety...) Seen here rounding the curve into Cajon Pass Summit (and stretching out downgraje for a mile or so behind), this train is heading from the port at Long Beach, California, to Logistics Park in Chicago, Illinois, behind BNSF engines 6387, 4186, 7484 ang 7388. Title:  BNSF 6646 - mp 58, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/6/10
Description:  General Electrics ES44C4 diesels, with their unique A-1-A trucks, are (so far) uniquf the the BNSF Railway. A pair of them, 6646 from the second order, and 6602 from the first, are on the head end of unit coil steel train U-PITKAI1-05A (Pittsburg, California to K`iser [Fontana], California) as it descends Cajon Pass in southern California on November 6, 2010. The second order of the ES44C4s have noticeably heavier handrail stanchions (the almost appear solid in this image) than the earlier order, a trait shared with later ES44DCs as well. (The consist for this train is 6646, 6602 and 7440 up front, with 4081 and 5010 as the DPUs on the rear.+

BNSF 7711 - mp 58, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/6/10
Title:  BNSF 7711 - mp 58, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/6/10
Description:  Faded GE ES44DCs dominate many of the trains in southern California, as many of the 7700-class units are assigned to trains out of Barstow, including the manifests out of the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, and the train the runs to San Diego. The paint looks horrible because, as I understand it, harsh chemicals are used to remove grafitti and those chemicals also damage the factory applied paint jobs. Ironically, not long before this San Diego to Barstow freight appeared, my San Diego-based brother had been commenting on the lack of variety appearing on the BARSDG / SDGBAR trains. The the M-SDGBAR1-05A (San Diego to Barstow) shows up with an old Santa Fe GP60M, still in sharp-looking Warbonnet colors, much to his surprise!

BNSF 5200 - Mormon Rocks, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/13/10
Title:  BNSF 5200 - Mormon Rocks, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/13/10
Description:  Cajon Pass famed "Mormon Rocks" are a series of cemented sandstone beds much more resistant to erosion than the surrounding gravel and silt sands, giving them a pockmarked appearance. Officially called the Rock Candy Mountains, the strange rock formations are one of the youngest and most active geological regions in North America. Formed by the overlapping of the Baja Plate and the North American Plate, the Mormon Rocks (so nicknamed because this was the preferred route of Amasa Lymand and Charles Rich, who led a band of Mormon settlers from Salt Lake City across the Mojave Desert in 1851) are a visible indicator of the San Andreas Fault (where the two aforementioned tectonic plates collide). BNSF Railway ethanol train G-RAVWAT7-06A (Ravenna NE to Watson CA), led by Dash 9-44CW 5200, threads its way through "the Rocks" on November 13, 2010.

BNSF 7222 - Silverwood, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/13/10
Title:  BNSF 7222 - Silverwood, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/13/10
Description:  Just a few years ago, BNSFs line over Cajon Pass (which they share with Union Pacific) was triple-tracked and a connection between the BNSF lines and the UPs former SP Colton Cutoff was installed just beyond the cantilever signal seen here. Here we see train Z-LACWSP9-13L (Priority UPS-LTL Intermodal; Los Angeles CA to Willow Springs IL) swinging around the last curve before reaching Summit.

BNSF 7381 - Silverwood, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/13/10
Title:  BNSF 7381 - Silverwood, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/13/10
Description:  BNSF Railway symbols loaded ethanol trains as grain trains, which makes sense, I suppose, since ethanol is derived from corn. Train G-RAVWAT7-06A (Ravenna NE to Watson CA) snakes through Silverwood, just around the corner from Cajon Pass Summit, on November 13, 2010. In the distance, behind the tank cars, the white trailers being conveyed on BNSF train Z-LACWSP9-13L (Los Angeles CA to Willow Springs IL).

Description:  BNSF Railways Z-LACNYC9-13A (Priority UPS-LTL Intermodal; Los Angeles CA to New York NY) ascends southern Californias Cajon Pass, which has a lot more trackage today than it did just a few years ago. The BNSF (on which the Union Pacific has trackage rights) has three mainlines here (two in this shot, and another off camera to the left), the UP has the former Southern Pacific Palmdale Cutoff (built in the late 1960s) - seen here just above the train - and the recently built Silverwood crossover connecting the BNSF and UP (just behind the 7575).

No Trespassing - Swarthout Road, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/13/10
Title:  No Trespassing - Swarthout Road, Cajon Pass, CA - 11/13/10
Description:  There always seem to be cars with families enjoying the mountains where Swarthout Road crosses the BNSF Railway mainline in the Blue Cut area of Cajon Pass. Perhaps that is why the railroad has stenciled their "no trespassing" warning directly on the rails, about every twenty feet, in this area. Also evident (on the inside of the opposite rail) is a heavy coating of grease, which reduces wear on the railhead and wheel flanges on this curvy crossing of the mountains.

UP 8344 - San Bernardino, CA - 11/13/10
Title:  UP 8344 - San Bernardino, CA - 11/13/10
Description:  A westbound Union Pacific freight, behind SD70ACe 8344 (and SD70ACe 8393, AC4400CW 5500 and SD70M 4954), enters San Bernardino after crossing Cajon Pass. The Pass is the depression between the San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mountains, visible just above the highway bridge (the I-15 Freeway, which parallels the railroad, is just barely visible on the hillside).

AMTK 461 - Fullerton, CA - 12/21/10
Title:  AMTK 461 - Fullerton, CA - 12/21/10
Description:  Running about a half-hour late, San Luis Obispo-bound Amtrak "Pacific Surfliner" #775 departs the station in Fullerton, California, on a rainy December 21, 2010. (This was the fifth of six consecutive days of nearly non-stop rain in southern California.) On the middle-main sits BNSF Railway train S-LHACLO1-21A, waiting for a clear signal after being held so that the passenger train could cross in front of him. The crew on the freight used this break to dodge the raindrops and scurry to the cafe in the station (in the lower right) for some warm coffee while they wait for their clear signal indication.

SCAX 882 - Orange, CA - 12/23/10
Title:  SCAX 882 - Orange, CA - 12/23/10
Description:  Metrolink train 602 (Los Angeles - Oceanside) makes a stop in Orange, California, two days before Christmas 2010. Orange is a busy station on the Metrolink system, as it serves both the Los Angeles to Oceanside line and the San Bernardino / Riverside to Oceanside line - these routes diverge just north of the former Santa Fe station. Many passengers change from one route to the other here, and trains are frequent (about every 10 minutes) in the mornings and afternoons. Amtraks "Pacific Surfliners" also pass through, but only two trains each way stop here. Each weekday, 33 Metrolink and 24 Amtrak trains pass through, along with a pair of Union Pacific and a pair of BNSF Railway freights most days. That's 57 passenger trains per day!
