For a brief period of time in 1993 coal trains destined for the Daniel Electric Generating Plant near Escatawpa, Mississippi operated on a test route that took them through New Orleans where they were handed off from the KCS to the CSX. At the time there were no other regular coal train movements through the Crescent City making this a rather unique move. The loaded trains operated on the KCS as train No. 89. Here we see train No. 89 approaching Alliance Avenue near Frellsen Junction behind KCS SD40-2 637 (the first SD40-2 ever built) and sister KCS SD40-2 646.
