D&H rebuild 7312 leads this 72 car BUME at west Endicott, the first of four D&H units on the train. The 7312 was notable for being named in honor of legendary D&H engineer Bernie O'Brien.
The M-K rebuild program has borne fruit, and the new diesels are back and in service. Showing the flag on this BUME at Phelps St in Port Dickinson are four lightning stripes, two each GP 38 and GP39-2s. My job allowed me some leeway in train watching-I ran a commercial laundry route-but not enough to give chase. Id have loved to see these on the bridge at Harpursville. GP 38-2 7307, the "Competition" leads the 73 cars of today's train.
RPPY rolls through BD headed for the yard on a typically cold, gloomy Binghamton day.
A southbound led by ex LV and Reading units heads out of the south end of Bevier St and is about to cross the Southern Tier as it makes its way to East Binghamton.
Sometimes MEBU would come in and the power would be cut off, either to change for other units, or for servicing and return to the train. Usually when this happened, if NYSW expected there to be several hours before the train went west, theyd leave a unit on to keep the air charged. Today, ex Reading 7408 has this duty.
A mix of power starts up the hill with PYRP at Bevier St.
PYRP gets rolling through Bevier St behind an ex Reading unit and a power set only the NYSW and D&H could put together, including two C424's.

Several GP 38s and 39s were rebuilt by MK in Mountain Top PA and repainted into the famous D&H lightning stripe scheme in 1990. Here three of them lead BUME at Phelps St in Port Dickinson NY
A Westbound holds at ZY for Eastbound traffic. Track 2 was in such poor shape between Hornell and Hunt at this time that most Eastbounds were run down Track 1.
