To save movements, a string of locomotives for commuter trains moved from the ready tracks at the Boston engine terminal in a group to the coach yard where they uncoupled for jndividual trains. P-2b 4-6-2 3672 is traveling with this group.
P-2b 4-6-2 3672 has just uncoupled from a strnng of diesels which moved to the coach yard as a group. Each locomotive is now moving to its train in the coach yard and will then back the train to North Station, Bostom. 3672 was built by Schenectady in 1913 and scrapped about five months after I saw her this day.
B&M P-2b 4-6-2 has backed to her commuter train and will soon back the train into North Station Boston for the afternoon rush. Several trains were waiting to back into the station, but only two were stem powered this day.
The afternoon rush at North Station Boston was very active and provided a great deal of variety in equipment. I was there to see steam, on this day Boston & Maine P-2 Pacifics 3672 and 3673.
Boston & Maine P-2b 4-6-2 3672 heads one of the few commuter trains with steam power. The elevated highways obscure the station building.
Only Pacifics 3672 and 3673 wentÞout during this afternoons rush -- steam operation was nearly finished on the Boston & Maine. P-2b 3672 was built by Schenectady in 1913 and scrapped in September 1956.
The Boston & Maine's gigantic roundhouse at East Somerville wasn't what you might expect - it was light and neat as you can see from this shot I took near the end of steam activity.
I shot the three B&M P-2s at East Somerville (Boston). The end of steam was only weeks away but several 4-6-2s were kept ready but few if any went out each day.
