Coming east and about to pass through Northtown Yard, the Empire Builder is running late this winter day.
Amtrak train No. 1, the Westbound Sunset Limited, is switched at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal - Track 5. This is during the transcontinental era of the Sunset Limited. Inbound off the CSX this train's consist was P40 809, F40 321, 1208, 39914, 32073 California, 32039, 38015, 33025, 34057, 39954, & 31033. At New Orleans the third car, sleeper 32073 California, was set out for mechanical issues and replaced with sleeper 32105 Oregon. I would ride this train from New Orleans to Lake Charles where I would meet Lowell McManus and begin an epic road trip to Mexico.
Train 8 is running quite late as it passes Newport Tower at 75 mph on a cold day. The tower was shutdown later this year and moved just south of here and is now a museum.
Gates are down, two toots, they're leaving and so are we. Off to a nice dinner, a couple of cocktails and a motel in Rouses Point. Tomorrow we head to Montreal.
Here is one more shot for a better view of the tower. This tower was a dispatching office for many years with BN/Milwaukee Road staffing it with employees from both companies. the 4 jobs were split between the two railroads.
