This was a pleasant surprise, I had no clue this unit was even coming. Also, A P42 duo in 2026 is getting kind of rare, dark times...

Amtrash being trash actually helped me on this day, as the return Floridian 40 was delayed by seven hours and came at a time I could actually catch it.

A patriotic pair of P42DCs take the lead of Amtraks California Zephyr as it slowly creeps past Glenwood Springs historic D&RG-era depot in the scenic Roaring Fork Valley on a partially-cloudy June afternoon. AMTK 5 would be making its 23rd stop along its 33-stop westbound route between Chicago, Illinois and Emeryville, California just before rainfall with a nice pair of P42DCs on the point; AMTK 174 wearing Amtraks new Phase VII livery and AMTK 160 wearing the famous Phase III "Pepsi Can" livery once carried by their fleet of B32-8WHs in honor of their 50th anniversary in 2021.

Fancy see Amtrak 160 with Original Scheme that January 4th 2014! And Our First Time see it in Heritage too!
My first catch of the "Borealis" service since it launched three months prior, I wanted to make sure to get it with one of the special/unusual units that has been frequenting it. This is a version of the scheme the B32-8WHs wore as delivered in the early '90s. I've caught this one before (leading No. 8, the eastbound Empire Builder, in February 2022), but the photo didn't turn out great and the video was unusable. Naturally, clouds filled in on what was forecast to be a mostly sunny afternoon.
