This detoured Empire Builder Amtrak train is a rare sight on the Wayzata Subdivision of the BNSF system. Here, the eastbound train is following the curve along the south shore of Howard Lake.
Amtrak 139 leads a detoured Empire Builder passenger train through its old stomping grounds. The Empire Builder used this line prior to the 1970 creation of Amtrak. At the end of passenger service on this line, the train was named "The Western Star" was discontinued in favor of the Empire Builder that utilized the Staples Subdivision through St. Cloud, MN.
