several unique units sit in front of the CP Winnipeg Diesel Shop
I had never shot at this location before, the last crossing westbound before the east end of Wyocena Siding.
The train is passing "Rio East," a short manual-throw siding that is primarily used as an escape hatch for MoW gangs on the single track between Dodge West and Wyocena. Although, this is one of the few trains that could fit in it if necessary! About five years ago I saw the TEC train use it to meet opposing traffic.
After 382 cleared the switch at Dodge West, the weed sprayer train still had a red signal. Meanwhile the intermediate signal to my east, red while 382 remained in the block it protected; eventually turned yellow, then green. In a few more minutes I heard another GEVO horn off to the west...
Before the westbound weed sprayer has even come to a stop at the end of Main 1, eastbound grain train 382 pops out from around the curve and hangs a right onto Main 2.
Despite waiting around a few more minutes at Columbus to catch Amtrak #8, I had ample time to get set up for this shot only about seven miles to the west. The weed sprayer train was limited to 25 MPH, and is slowing to a stop anyway to meet two at Dodge West.
This is a one-of-a-kind unit. It was one of only two GP39-2s on the Soo Line roster. The other, 4598, still carries its Soo Line paint and reporting marks. I caught that on the M&P earlier this year. This train was restricted to 25 MPH to do its work along the line.
