Here is another group of Milwaukee Road 4-6-0 ten wheelers built by Baldwin in the early 1900's. All went through multiple times they were renumbered and definitely NOT consecutively! What a mess!
Burham, Wms & Co (Baldwin predecessor) built this 4-6-0 in September of 1900 originally as a CM&StP Vauclain compound ten wheeler #352 (serial #18202, class B4). It was renumbered several times starting in May of 1907 to #1702 > in September of 1912 to #4302 > in March of 1921, it was simplified and renumbered to #2852 > finally in June of 1928 it was renumbered one more time to MILW #1075. The loco served for nearly 40 years before being put in a line for the scrapper's torch in May of 1940. Rail fan Edwin Wilson took the photo which is now part of my rr collection.
This good looking Milwaukee Road 4-6-0 still has many years of service left when this photo was taken in Sioux Falls, SD. Actually, Milwaukee Road 4-6-0 #1076 started out from Burham, Wms & Co (Baldwin predecessor) in September of 1900 as CM&StP Vauclain compound ten wheeler #353 (serial #18203, class B4) but was renumbered several times starting with March of 1907 to #1703 > in September of 1912 to #4303 > in March of 1921, it was simplified and renumbered to #2853 > finally renumbered one more time in September of 1938 to MILW #1076. The loco lasted until February of 1953 before being scrapped after 53 years of dedicated service. No exact day in 1940 was given so an approximate was used. The photo was taken by rail fan Hanft and is now in my rr collection
Nice roster shot of Milwaukee Road 4-6-0 #1077 while it sat in a holding line at the Milwaukee yard. Burham, Wms & Co (Baldwin predecessor) built this 4-6-0 in September of 1900 as CM&StP #354 (serial #18219, class B4). After a lifetime of 40 years, it was retired and scrapped in May of 1940 - one of the earliest in the B4 class. Rail fan Edwin Wilson took the photo which is now part of my rr collection.
It appears that MILW #1078 is in a storage line at the Mitchell, SD yard. The loco still looks great and has another 8 years of service before being officially retired in May of 1948. This loco originally started out as CM&StP Vauclain compound ten wheeler #355 (serial #18220, class B4) built by Burham, Wms & Co (Baldwin predecessor) in September of 1900. Like the entire B4 class, the loco was renumbered several times starting in August of 1907 to #1705 > in September of 1912 to #4305 > in 1921, it was simplified and renumbered to #2855 > in June of 1938, it was renumbered that last time to MILW #1078. After 48 years of dedicated service, the loco was retired and relegated to the scrap line in May of 1948. Rail fan Edwin Wilson took the photo which is now part of my rr collection.

After nearly 48 years of service, the loco was sent to the scrapper's torch in February of 1950. No date was listed for this photo so an approximate one was used. Rail fan Max Miller took this photo which is now in my collection.

Interesting to see what was running on the rails while I was having my 3rd birthday! Sadly, this Milwaukee Road 4-6-0 has reached the end of the line - literally - as it has met up with the scrapper's torch at the Bensenville, IL yard. MILW 4-6-0 #1069 started out as CM&StP Vauclain compound 4-6-0 #428 (serial #22749, B4 class) built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in August of 1903. It was renumbered several times. After nearly 51 years of dedicated service, the poor loco was scrapped in July of 1954. Rail fan Guhr took this photo which is now in my rr collection.
With its bell gone, it's obvious that this Milwaukee Road 4-6-0 has reached the dead/scrap line at Bensenville, IL yard. It was declared scrap in October of 1953 so now just waiting for the scrapper's torch to arrive. This probably was the last photo ever taken of it. Baldwin originally built this ten wheeler in August of 1903 as CM&StP 4-6-0 Vauclain compound #426 (serial #22746, class B4). The loco was renumbered several times starting in February of 1908 to #1776 > in October of 1912 to #4376 > in January of 1918, it was simplified and renumbered to 2926 >in November of 1920 to #2884 > and finally in July of 1938 to MILW #1067. According to the Baldwin records, this loco was scrapped in December of 1953 but this photo shows it was still around in January of 1954. This may have been the last photo of it before the scrapper's torch hit it. Originally built by Baldwin in September of 1902 as CM&StP 4-6-0 #410 (serial #20929, class B4), the Vauclain compound ten wheeler was renumbered several times during its service. Starting in September of 1907, it was renumbered to #1760 > in September of 1912 to #4360 > in January of 1916, it was rebuilt to a simple loco and renumbered #2910 > in November of 1920 to #2879 > finally in July of 1938 it was last renumbered to MILW #1062. The loco lasted until December of 1953 before being scrapped after 51 years of service to the Milwaukee Road. This is a Guhr photo now in my rr collection.
With its steam up, MILW #1079 is ready to roll out from the Janesville, WI yard and contrary to the Baldwin records which lists its scrapping in March of 1950. Burham, Wms & Co (Baldwin predecessor) built this 4-6-0 locomotive in September of 1900 as CM&StP Vauclain compound ten wheeler #357 (serial #18222, class B4) but was renumbered starting in March of 1907 to #1707 > in September of 1912 to #4307 > in February of 1921, it was simplified and renumbered to #2857 > in June of 1938, it received its last number of MILW #1079. After 50 dedicated years of service, the loco was sent to the scrap line in March of 1950. Rail fan R. Donald Ross took this photo which is now part of my rr collection.
