Chicago & North Western Railway SD9 1710 at Proviso, Illinois on February 14, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 1703 was built in May 1954 ( c/n 19505 ) and was equipped with both a steam generator and dynamic brakes. The short hood was chopped down around 1966, the steam generator was removed in August 1971 and the locomotive was renumbered to 6610. I have no idea about the receptacle below the headlights. It may have provided coach lighting with power from the auxiliary generator. |
