PRR 8672, AS-18AM, 1958
Volkmer. Here is an image of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 23 June 1958. Shown here at the Passenger Station (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8672 and #8671. Both are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in March of 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. In this context, they're about to pass under the 12th Street Footbridge while serving as mid-train helpers for an iron-ore drag that's about to climb the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and the steel mills of Western Pennsylvania.
