It was published originally in his (2019) book entitled "Pennsylvania Railroad-Best Of Bill Volkmer: Volume 3-Altoona," page 81. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8671, #8674, and #8677. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in March of 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. They are pushing an iron-ore train up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they will uncouple and return to East Altoona for yet another run up "The Mountain." |

In this context, they're pushing a westbound mixed-cargo freight train that is already passing through the Allegheny Tunnel; in a matter of minutes, though, they'll uncouple and return to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." In the left foreground is the link to the westbound New Portage Secondary Track. |

PGH-ALT-63. Here is an original photo that I took after riding in a Pennsylvania Railroad passenger train from Pittsburgh to Altoona on 08 September 1963. Shown here (F to R) are PRR engines #8669 and #8671. Both are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. They are pulling a 94-car mixed-cargo freight train past the Altoona Passenger Station on their way to Enola and points East. Visible at the right are the last three cars of my passenger train as they depart for Harrisburg, Philadelphia, and New York City. Also visible is the 17th Street Bridge in the distance.
