Looks like the CN dash 9s are starting to show the wear and tear of their engines. It's interesting to think that even five years ago, these engines seemed relatively new. Now, whenever you get to spot one you quite often see a big cloud of smoke being coughed out whenever the engineer turns up the throttle. I surely hope that CN will soon give these engines a rebuild; the same kind that CP is recently doing to their AC44CWs that is, changing the prime movers which to are showing symptoms of a heavily worn down engine. They call these rebuilt AC44CWs “AC4400CWM” and they are numbered from 8000 onwards. Speaking of wear and tear, I have never seen a CN SD70I/75I show that kind of state despite being the same age as the C44-9. I guess that time is already starting to show the difference in quality and reliability between GE dash 9s and EMD SD70s which has been a quite often debated topic amongst railfans and Industry insiders. The question now is why are Class 1 mainlines dominated by GE

I’ve heard that the main reason for that is because GE arranges discounts on large orders, something that EMD doesn’t do making it rather economical for railways to buy from GE. At the given moment in time, I do know and have seen CN lease teir 4 compliant SD70Ace demonstrators which gives hope on that the CN mainline won’t be all GEVO in the future.
