DH 4-6-6-4 #1502 - Delaware & Hudson
Title:  DH 4-6-6-4 #1502 - Delaware & Hudson
Description:  The Union Pacific designed 4-6-6-4 Challenger was embraced by the Delaware & Hudson after the delivery of the first group from Also-Schenectady in 1940. Unfortunately, this was near the end of the steam era. These beautiful and powerful articulated locos barely served the DH before heading to the scrapper's torch. The entire J-95 class of 40 locos was scrapped in ten months between October of 1952 to August of 1953, barely after 7 to 13 years of service for the class members. None survived. This photo appears to be a railman trip possibly signaling the loco's eminent demise. Tom Beckett (see comment below) has added a lot of interesting details about this locaiton. Loco specs - serial #69299, class J-95, four 20.5x32" cylinders, 69" drivers, and an impressive boiler pressure of 285 psi. It could generate a tractive effort of 94,000 lb. George Hamcke photo

DH 4-6-6-4 #1502 - Delaware & Hudson
Title:  DH 4-6-6-4 #1502 - Delaware & Hudson
Description:  Great photo by an unknown photographer of the massive 1940 Also-Schenectady built 4-6-6-4 Challenger being serviced. There is some question as to whether this is 1502 or one of the other Challengers on the roster since the road number was cut off, but the view would be nearly identical for any of the 40 built for the Delaware & Hudson.

Former Rock Island Depot - Dows, IA
Title:  Former Rock Island Depot - Dows, IA
Description:  Back in 1997 when an unknown photographer took these photos, the former Rock Island depot was serving to an official Iowa welcome center with signs posted on I-35 for travelers. Unfortunately, due to Iowa state cutbacks in 2015, the signs along I-35 were removed and subsequent loss of state welcome center funds left the depot much quieter and closed part of the year. The depot still houses local historical and railroad items. Does anyone know the current status

Description:  Here is another view of the former Rock Island depot that served as an official Iowa welcome center until funds and signs were pulled out in 2015 due to state funding cuts. Does anyone know the current status of this cute depot? An unknown photographer took this photo back in 1997, possibly lured by the signs that were once posted on I-35 but were removed in 2015.
