Oil south
Title:  Oil south
Description:  I had just come through downtown Muskogee-and just missed a southbound going past the yard-and was headed north on OK 16 toward Wagoner, when I saw headlights throught the trees. I ran back toward town, and got him at the next crossing. Not the most scenic, but the leader is clean and its an attractive power set. He had 103 cars, three of which were buffers. UP 5701 brought up the rear.

Oil today
Title:  Oil today
Description:  I was out for a ride that followed the MKT from Muskogee to Wagoner, among other places. I saw at least three oil trains, including this one on the ex MP side of Wagoner. The train was departing for Van Buren, then most likely on to Little Rock and Louisiana. The low light, blue sky, and golden grass made for a pretty photo.

CO Experimental Steam Turbine #501 - Chesapeake & Ohio
Title:  CO Experimental Steam Turbine #501 - Chesapeake & Ohio
Description:  Here is a close up of the massive front grill of this innovative, experimental steam turbine locomotive built by Baldwin and Westinghouse in 1948. It has almost the appearance of a pair of screen doors in the front. Unfortunately, a total disaster in terms of reliability and the 3 built were scrapped in 1950 - barely two years of trial. C.W. CO Experimental Steam Turbine #501 - Chesapeake & Ohio
Title:  CO Experimental Steam Turbine #501 - Chesapeake & Ohio
Description:  One of the few action shots of this innovative experiment by Chesapeake & Ohio. Built by Baldwin in conjunction with Westinghouse, the 3 units built had conventional fire-tube boilers mounted backward to regular practice. They were streamlined and looked like nothing else on the rails. They were built for speeds of 100 miles per hour. The only problem was that they were incredibly complex and spent much more time in the shop than on the rails. Coal dust fouled the forward traction motors and water dripping from the boiler often short circuited the traction motors on the other two powered trucks. Eventually they were quietly scrapped in 1950. C.W. Jernstrom photo

CO Tender T-295 - Chesapeake & Ohio
Title:  CO Tender T-295 - Chesapeake & Ohio
Description:  Interesting slide by Joseph R. Quinn of the Vanderbilt tender T-295 with Commonwealth six wheel straight equalized tender trucks using conventional bearings. A rare sight even in the days of steam! At one time it was rumored that it would be moving to the B&O Museum but couldn't find out what has happened to it since this photo was taken. Does anyone know its disposition?

Description:  Nice original photo of one of only three powerful 0-10-0 switchers built by the Canadian Pacific Angus Works in 1913. These were big, beefy switchers with quite sizable coal and water supplies in its tender. Specs - class W1a, one of 3,51" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 23.5x30" cylinders, engine weight of 241,000 lb, tractive effort of 55,225 lb. This powerful switcher was finally scrapped in January of 1954 after serving 43 years with the other two gone by February of 1957. George Harris photographer
