Description:  12th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during March of 1966. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #6513 and #5842. #6513 is a GF-25A built by General Electric in 1965 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. #5842 is an EP-20 built in 1947 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. In this photo, #6513 is in the process of coupling with #5842 to help pull the passenger train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin ~ whereupon #6513 will uncouple and return to Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up the Mountains. Note the railroader on the other side of the tracks, who will couple all of the necessary hoses.

Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #6513 and #6083. #6513 is a GF-25A built by General Electric in 1965 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. #6083 is an EF-30A built by EMD in 1966 and rated at 3,000 horsepower. They are pulling a westbound mixed-cargo freight around the Horseshoe Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West.

Title:  Snapping the First Class
Description:  No.25 - The Duquesne - with a pair of U25C helpers and three E units with 22 cars and healthy head-end traffic is coming out of Scotch Run Curve at MP 241 on this first day of September, 1966 at a time when renumbering of locomotives had begun for the pending Penn-Central merger. PRR helpers on the point were referred to as "snappers". Note the lead E unit still has its trainphone antennas.

Description:  Here is page one of a four-page camera study entitled "Triple Train Treat On Horse Shoe." It was published originally in the December 1967 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 18. Photos by J.J. Young, Jr.; text by David P. Morgan. Top Photo: In the foreground is PRR engine #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during May of 1918, retired in September of 1956, enshrined at the Curve on 8 June 1957, and restored for excursion service in April of 1987. In the background are three PRR engines pulling a westbound TrucTrain: #2358, #6517, and #6167. #2358 is an EF-25 built by GM-EMD in March of 1965 and rated at 2,500 HP. #6517 is a GF-25A built by GE in December of 1965 and rated at 2,500 HP. #6167 is an EF-36 built by GM-EMD in January of 1967 and rated at 3,600 HP.
