WM 4-6-2 #154 - Western Maryland
Title:  WM 4-6-2 #154 - Western Maryland
Description:  Nice example of a 1909 Burnham, Wms & Co (Baldwin) light Pacific, class K-1. Concerning these small Pacifics, author John Bohon was quoted as saying "Contrary to what is stated the WM did not find the K-1 too small or slippery. In fact the opposite was very true. Men from the era considered these little pacifics fine locomotives. The only complaint I ever heard was they were a little more precise to fire than the newer K-2. Many of the oldtimers considered the K-1, or hundred and fifties as they called them, the best looking locomotives the railroad ever owned. I include myself in those who think that way." Eventually the entire class was sold to the power-short Seaboard Air Lines in 1943 for passenger service and survived until retirement between June, 1950-August, 1952. WM 2-10-0 #1125 - Western Maryland
Title:  WM 2-10-0 #1125 - Western Maryland
Description:  This appears to be either a Baldwin builder's photo with specs at the bottom or an in-house Western Maryland photo with the specs for this massive decapod steam locomotive. It was officially built by Baldwin in June of 1927 (serial #60053, class I-2). The specs are listed at the bottom of the photo. The entire class was retired around 1954 when diesels took over the duties.

WM 0-6-0 #1011 - Western Maryland
Title:  WM 0-6-0 #1011 - Western Maryland
Description:  Another nice photo of a 1914 Baldwin built 0-6-0 goat for the Western Maryland Rwy. (B-3 class) The switcher worked for the WM until 1946 when it and its sisters were sold to Conemaugh & Black Lick. No info was given for this photo but it may be the Hagerstown roundhouse in the background. The date is approximate. No photographer listed either.

WM 2-10-0 #1111 - Western Maryland
Title:  WM 2-10-0 #1111 - Western Maryland
Description:  Normally I don't post photos of older photos but this one is another exception due to the quality and beautiful action that was captured. A note on the back of the photo states "Shot near Cumberland, MD. Taken from an old photo 2 1/2 x 4" taken by a box camera in 1938 (I have the neg of this)" by an unknown photographer. SpecfIcs - I-2 class, 61" drivers, impressive 240 psi boiler pressure, 30x32" cylinders, engine weight of 419,280 lb, impressive tractive effort of 96,315 lb. The date used in 1938 is approximate.

Title:  WM 0-6-0 #1008 - Western Maryland
Description:  Good shot of a 1914 Baldwin built 0-6-0 goat for the Western Maryland Rwy. The switcher worked for the WM until 1946 when it and its sisters were sold to Conemaugh & Black Lick. No info was given for this photo but based on York Corrugating Co sign, this probably is Harrisburg, PA. The date is approximate. No photographer listed either.

WM 2-8-8-2 #914 - Western Maryland
Title:  WM 2-8-8-2 #914 - Western Maryland
Description:  WM #914 is an excellent example of the first order for Mallets that Lima ever built back in 1915. This and subsequent orders established Lima as a important locomotive builder in league with Baldwin and Alco. Specifics - L1 class, 52" drivers, 210 psi boiler pressure, 26x30" high pressure cylinders, 40x30" low pressure cylinders, engine weight of 506,500 lb,impressive tractive effort of 97,877 lb. No location was given for the photo but the twin water towers sets the locaiton at the Hagerstown yard. Date is approximate. No photographer

WM 2-8-8-2 #909 - Western Maryland
Title:  WM 2-8-8-2 #909 - Western Maryland
Description:  This 1915 Lima built Chesapeake type locomotive demonstrated that Lima knew how to build strong locomotives to meet the growing need for more power. This class L-1 had small 52" drivers, could develop an impressive 210 psi of boiler pressure to feed to its set of 26"x30" high pressure cylinders and its set of 40"x30" low pressure cylinders. The engine weight tipped the scales at 506,500 lb and it could apply a respectable tractive effort of 97,877 lb. Note the man almost swallowed up by the loco just behind the first set of cylinders. Small problem listing this correct on the website - no choice for Lima 2-8-8-2 available. Date is approximate. Max Miller photo

WM 4-6-2 #205 - Western Maryland
Title:  WM 4-6-2 #205 - Western Maryland
Description:  Caught here heading up a passenger train somewhere in Maryland (locaiton not listed by the unknown photographer). With the tender piled high with coal, this photo was taken obviously before it was converted to oil buring in 1947. Author John Bohon describes #205 - "While in service to Baltimore, this loco was converted to oil burning to comply with Baltimore smoke regulations. As a result, this loco and its 4 other refitted sisters stayed east of Cumberland, MD. Two of the K-2's, 204 and 205, were selected for further duty as boilers providing steam used to thaw coal in hoppers before they were unloaded into ships at Port Covington, the WM port in Baltimore. The 205 was converted to thaw service and sent to Baltimore but so far I have not been able to find evidence it was ever used. At least a couple of pictures show 205 in Baltimore and so converted. 205 was probably scrapped in 1955 or 1956." Unknown photographer

WM 4-6-2 #204 - Western Maryland
Title:  WM 4-6-2 #204 - Western Maryland
Description:  Near the end of its service, the 1912 Baldwin built 4-6-2 Pacific served the Western Maryland in an unorthodox manner as described by the unknown photogarapher on the back of the photo. "WM #204 (4-6-2) K-2 used to thaw frozen hopper cars at Port Covington, 1-14-58." As described on www.steamlocomotive.com by author John Bohon, "Two of the K-2's, 204 and 205, were selected for further duty as boilers providing steam used to thaw coal in hoppers before they were unloaded into ships at Port Covington, the WM port in Baltimore. The 204 was indeed used used as a thaw engine. There are photos of it in that service. The 204 lasted until about 1961 and was almost a complete locomotive. For WM fans this is the locomotive that truly got away. Located only a few miles from the B&O Museum so late it appears the railroad gave no thought to saving the 204 and simply scrapped it. What makes this even more interesting is that until retirement the 204 was considered by many on the railroad including management to be the belle of the road."
