NS 975
Title:  NS 975
Description:  At 11:22am on Saturday June 10, 2017, southbound Norfolk Southern Operation Awareness and Response (OAR) "Safety Train" NS 975 passed through Haselton Yard in Struthers, Ohio with NS #5641 (GP38-2) leading the matching train set. The goal of OAR is to strengthen relationships with the first responders across the NS network. On this day, the train was passing from Binghampton, New York to Canton, Ohio. NS 975 is passing NS 15M, which is still building their train in the yard.

Pullman Company Reunion at Central Union Terminal
Title:  Pullman Company Reunion at Central Union Terminal
Description:  How often do you see two Pullman cars in the wild in the same photo in 2017?! I love passenger cars. They are my favorite piece of railroad equipment. I love the history of the cars and the stories that they tell. On this trip out west, I got to see a lot of great passenger cars, some of which I have seen before and others that I have not. Here is an example of both. On Monday June 19, 2017, our four-hour late westbound Amtrak Capitol Limited train 29 had a private car on the rear - a great start to the trip! Washington D.C. Chapter of the National Railway Historical Societys "Dover Harbor" with their "DC NRHS" green drumhead brought up the rear. This heavy weight car was constructed by the Pullman Company of Chicago in July 1923 (lot 4698, Plan 2951) as a combine baggage-library car named the “Maple Shade.” The 81-foot car weighed 80 tons and had a four section, twelve-seat lounge, a barbershop, and a twenty-eight foot baggage area. Painted in the Pennsylvania Railroads Tuscan Red, it operated in service at the head of that railroads name trains, including the Broadway Limited and the Spirit of St. Louis for eleven years. In March of 1934, the Maple Shade was recalled into the Pullman Company Shops. The car was rebuilt into six double bedrooms, a buffet, and a lounge, and was renamed the Dover Harbor. The Dover Harbor and eight other cars with this same configuration were built according to plan 4015 and were designated the Dover Series. Air conditioning, which was new to railroad cars at this time, was also installed. After rebuilding the car, which weighed 87 tons, it was repainted to the standard Pullman green and gold livery that it wears today. After the renovation was completed in May of 1934, the Pullman Company assigned the car to service on the Michigan Central Railroad, a subsidiary of the New York Central Railroad. In 1939, it operated with sister cars Dover Plains and Dover Bay on the westbound Lake Shore Limited and the eastbound Commodore Vanderbilt between New York and Chicago. This same car, eighty-three years prior, would have stopped in Toledo, Ohio on the mainline of the New York Central, though not at Central Union Terminal, as it was not built until September of 1950! The history of this car goes on, but this is some of the more important notes. Ive actually ridden in this car and photographed it several times on Norfolk Southern steam specials with Nickel Plate Road #765. Also in this photo is another Pullman Company passenger car, one that I have not photographed before. In the background you can see a gray Norfolk Southern work train dining car, NW 521414, named the “Spirit of Tim Drake.” This car was built in 1922 as a 12 sections, 1 drawing room (12-1) sleeper and wore the name “Cuttyhunk” on the Norfolk and Western. It is one of the oldest cars owned by NS. This car was converted to work train service in April of 1967. The inside of this car is completely gutted from how it was built and now features a countertop running down both walls of the car with two long benches that also run down the length of the car. It’s interesting to see the contrast of these two cars. One which is still running on passenger trains and is restored to its original appearance and configuration and is privately owned, and one that has been totally gutted and repurposed and is owned by the railroad.

NS #6310 (SD40E) and NS #6301 (SD40E) were on the rear. The bridge is a seven-arch stone bridge spanning the Conemaugh River and was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad between 1887 and 1888. This bridge survived the massive Johnston Flood of 1889 and blocked debris caught in flood waters, which caught fire creating an inferno covering 30 acres.

NS 60N meets NS 64K
Title:  NS 60N meets NS 64K
Description:  Traffic was running irregularly this evening in Tyrone, Pennsylvania. Trains were running opposite main and all of the westbounds we saw were literally crawling past us. One even stopped, blocking the crossing briefly. Amtrak was forced to do station work on track two, the track that is not next to the platform. They unloaded passengers in the middle of the railroad crossing, which is pretty unusual to see. At 5:15pm on Thursday August 18, 2017, eastbound loaded ethanol train 64K crawled around the bend at the Amtrak Station in Tyrone, Pennsylvania. Seven minutes later, it finally crawled to a halt, just as we heard a westbound train, moving at track speed, blowing for the railroad crossing. At 5:22pm, westbound loaded slab train 60N rounded the curve in Tyrone with NS #9592 (C44-9W) and NS #2571 (SD70). Even though it's just a dash nine, I really like this shot!

NS 04T - Amtrak Pennsylvanian 42
Title:  NS 04T - Amtrak Pennsylvanian 42
Description:  At 9:35am on Friday August 18, 2017, the eastbound Amtrak Pennsylvanian, train 42, with Amtrak #99 (P42DC) passed the crowded porch of The Station Inn Bed and Breakfast in Cresson, Pennsylvania. It was raining, and nobody, including myself, wanted to leave the porch to take a picture. I captured Rob, James, and Dan Del Prato giving a wave to the train. The Amtrak train is passing eastbound loaded grain train 56K with NS #8092 (ES44AC) and NS #9210 (C44-9W), which is sitting on Five West. In an hour or so, RJ Corman would come to pick up this train.

NS 02T - Amtrak Capitol Limited 30
Title:  NS 02T - Amtrak Capitol Limited 30
Description:  Amtrak engineer D. Embler Jr. gets logged into his PTC screens during the station stop of Amtrak’s eastbound Capitol Limited, train #30, in Toledo, Ohio just after 11:45pm on Tuesday January 7, 2020. During this stop, the conductor and engineer swap with a fresh crew, and now it is Embler’s responsibility to advance the train from Toledo to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as safely and efficiently as possible. Freshly repainted AMTK #837 (P40DC) and not so fresh AMTK #58 (P42DC), along with their eight cars, are showing on time in Toledo, despite leaving Chicago Union Station roughly 30 minutes behind due to a cab signal failure and having to spin the locomotives at the last minute. Embler is one of Amtrak’s most qualified engineers (and one of the best, in my opinion). Hired as a fireman with Penn Central June 19, 1974, Embler was promoted to engineer in Conrail’s very first class of engineers on June 30, 1976. He switched over to Amtrak, starting in Boston, Massachusetts on August 18, 1984.

Description:  Just before 10am on Thursday April 16, 2020, southbound intermodal local G88 knocked the signal down at CP Austell in Austell, Georgia with NS #3511 (SD40-2) and NS #6220 (SD33ECO). G88 shuttles intermodal cars from Austell Intermodal Terminal, which it just departed here, to the nearby Inman Yard, a distance of roughly 14 railroad miles. NS #3511 is a rare breed on NS (and becoming even more rare), as it is one of the few SD40-2s with its headlight on the nose.

NS 154
Title:  NS 154
Description:  At 10:49am on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, northbound mixed freight train 154 passed Amour Yard, near downtown Atlanta, Georgia, with one of the newest units to the Norfolk Southern roster as a distributed power unit. NS #3990 (AC4400CW) was purchased by NS in August of 2023, part of a group of 36 former CEFX leasing GE AC4400CW locomotives from CIT Rail. This was the first one that I shot.
