Helga
Title:  Helga
Description:  Among Australia's oddest locomotives is a group of former Danish State RR MZ-class units. 16 of the early-70s units were brought into the country in 2007-08 and are operated by the Independent Railways of Australia. 14 survive and work in New South Wales where railfans have taken to calling them "Helgas". Not so odd are their internals, which are very similar to EMD's SD45; with 20-cylinder 3600HP 645 power plants. 1434 is shown here sitting by the depot at Goulburn.

Title:  Danes Down Under
Description:  A pair of Independent Rail 14-class units (1434 and 1437) haul a 'down' (away from Sydney-westbound in this case) container train towards Yass Junction in December 2011. These 3000 HP Swedish-built units were imported from Denmark in 2006 to 09, where they had been MZ-class units for DSB. Mechanically they're very similar to SD40-2s.

These beauties were built from 1970 with 3200HP; they are the last units built new with the classic EMD "Bulldog" styling. Title:  Australian Beauty: QRN CLF-Class CLF-3
Description:  17 CL-class units were built by Clyde/EMD as model AT26C for Commonwealth RY from 1970. They carry a 16-645 for 3300HP and subsequently rebuilt in the early '90s into CLF (freight) and CLP (passenger) configurations. CLF-3 and its three mates in this train still wear Genesee & Wyoming colors but belong to QR National. Their unique design features the final use of EMD's "Bulldog" nose attached to a carbody that looks more like an F-45.

Steam and an Alco out of Canberra
Title:  Steam and an Alco out of Canberra
Description:  Australia has numerous railroad museums, many of which are supported by the Australian Railway Historical Society. Heritage trains are not uncommon; much more so than seems in the US and the national rail authority ARTC goes to great lengths to accomidate them on their mainlines. This Santa Train is out of Canberra and is running up the branch as far as Bungendore on a Sunday morning. In the lead is 3016, a 108-year old steamer originally built in the UK by Beyer-Peacock as a 4-6-4T and later converted to a 4-6-0. It worked in surburban Sydney service for many years before being sent out to work rural NSW lines, where it survived until being retired in 1972. In support is Alco 44-class (DL-500B) 4403, a 1958-build, 1800 HP unit with a 251 powerplant.
