Australia has numerous railroad museums, many of which are supported by the Australian Railway Historical Society. Heritage trains are not uncommon; much more so than seems in the US and the national rail authority ARTC goes to great lengths to accomidate them on their mainlines. This Santa Train is out of Canberra and is running up the branch as far as Bungendore on a Sunday morning. In the lead is 3016, a 108-year old steamer originally built in the UK by Beyer-Peacock as a 4-6-4T and later converted to a 4-6-0. It worked in surburban Sydney service for many years before being sent out to work rural NSW lines, where it survived until being retired in 1972. In support is Alco 44-class (DL-500B) 4403, a 1958-build, 1800 HP unit with a 251 powerplant. |

The second unit in an eastbound grain train runs full out through Galong NSW. The lead 81-class unit appears to have it easy compared to X-47, whose bark is pure EMD. The unit was delivered in 1975 with a 16-645 putting out roughly 2000HP. |
