Modrany Yard, Picture 4
Title:  Modrany Yard, Picture 4
Description:  This picture took some editing, surprisingly. The photo lab did a nice index of it, but when I scanned the negative myself it was really dark and dull, requiring some work in Gimp, and now I think it looks reasonably decent.

Modrany Yard, Picture 4, High-Saturation Edit
Title:  Modrany Yard, Picture 4, High-Saturation Edit
Description:  In spite of my earlier edit to get the most out of this photo I another one with high saturation and contrast to achieve the early evening lighting that was there in real life. I may have overdone it, though, so Im not sure which photo is really better.

Nadrazi Modrany, Picture 2
Title:  Nadrazi Modrany, Picture 2
Description:  When most people think of Modrany, I assume that they think of Modrany Zaztavka, where the trams stop, but in reality the larger station is further south, and older. Heres a shot of it taken across the yard from the bike path.

CD 703713-8 With Work Train At Modrany
Title:  CD 703713-8 With Work Train At Modrany
Description:  This train had another small locomotive that looked even smaller than 700162-1, but it wasnt. #703713-8 is a Class 703 diesel, which weighs 24 metric tons, 2 more than a Class 700.

CD 130006-0 With Container Train
Title:  CD 130006-0 With Container Train
Description:  As I said earlier, there are a surprising number of older locomotives in freight service around Prague nowadays. Here 130006-0, built in the 1970s (with a car body design based on earlier Skoda electrics from the 1950s), works a container train through Hostivar.

Title:  CD 363127-2 Pan at Hostivar
Description:  This is a pan of 363127-2 heading south with an express at Hostivar. For some reason, the photo didnt blur too much, but on the other hand the trains through Hostivar arent monsterously fast.

Nadrazi Cercany Before Subway Opening
Title:  Nadrazi Cercany Before Subway Opening
Description:  I took this shot around mid-October, when much of the track construction in Cercany was complete. The passenger subway still wasnt open, though, as you can see from the walkway still in place on the other end of the station building. Incidentally, this is my first shot to go on Flickr which was shot with Ektar.

Nadrazi Kralupy nad Vltavou
Title:  Nadrazi Kralupy nad Vltavou
Description:  Im not aware of the year that Nadrazi Kralupy nad Vltavou was built, but it looks very much like its from the 1960s, inside as well as out. Its still quite a busy station, being on the mainline between Prague and Dresden.

Old Diesels
Title:  Old Diesels
Description:  These locomotives were across the yard at one of the locomotive sheds (Kralupy has more than one), and if the scan had been better (I didnt do this roll of film myself, but had a crappy photo lab handle it), I would be able to read the numbers, but that will have to wait until I get around to rescanning the photo myself. In any case, these are "bespectacled" diesels, and because I cant read the number I dont know if theyre original or rebuilt.

New Karlovo Namesti Metro Sign
Title:  New Karlovo Namesti Metro Sign
Description:  Standard Prague Metro station signs are color coded to match the color of the line, meaning green for the A line, yellow for the B Line, and red for the C line. The signs on the far side of the track are an exception, as theyre made from metal letters attached to the wall. Karlovo Namesti, however, recently bucked this trend when these blue station signs were put in on the passenger side of the platforms...for the B line. Theoretically they should be yellow, as the blue line is only projected as of now, and my understanding is that once constructed the blue line will have dedicated platforms. Im almost wondering if these signs are a test to see whether the new signs will look right.

Old Karlovo Namesit Station Sign
Title:  Old Karlovo Namesit Station Sign
Description:  This is an example of the train-side signs on the Karlovo Namesti platforms, which are standard except for that the letters are on a silver background, which makes them harder to read than in other stations. The little yellow square that you can see indicates, as on other lines, which line the platform is for, in this case Line B.

Title:  CD 810056-8 at Nadrazi Kladno

Cercany Subway Open, But Already Vandalised
Title:  Cercany Subway Open, But Already Vandalised
Description:  Finally...the passenger subway opened in Cercany in mid-November, although I dont know the exact day. This was my first time in it, and I noted that already it had been vandalised. I heard that the train was coming in on Nastupiste 2, meaning Platform 2, so I went to Kolej 2, or Track 2, forgetting that there were 4 tracks and two new platforms. An undercover police officer, probably looking for the person who did this, promptly asked me what I was doing on the wrong platform. Not realising my mistake, I eventually figured out what he was saying, and changed platforms in time to get my train. This was the first time a police officer had ever questioned me in the Czech Republic for taking photographs, but at least someone is finally trying to stop the vandalism on this line, as Ive been saying from the beginning that its getting wrecked faster than its being built. I do note, though, that this year the policing seems to have been more determined, and indeed the vandalism has gone down slightly.

Nadrazi Senohraby
Title:  Nadrazi Senohraby
Description:  I have a number of photos of Nadrazi Senohraby on Flickr already, but this is the first one that I think I have taken from the platform (or its one of the few, anyway). The station was recently renovated almost beyond recognition by the Prague-Ceske Budejovice Corridor Reconstruction Project. Where I was standing was a giant mud pit only a year earlier, and a year before that it looked like little had changed since the 19th Century.

Description:  In spite of the vandalism mentioned earlier, and the advanced age of the Class 451 and 452 "Pantograph" EMUs, the units are still being repainted again and again. This was the first one that I saw in the new two-tone blue and grey local livery.

CD 296 in the Snow
Title:  CD 296 in the Snow
Description:  Im not sure if this is the same crane that Ive often seen before in Cercany, but this is the closest, best shot that Ive ever managed to get of one of these, which I consider to be really weird because of the short boom. The main advantages that I had this time were that I was in daylight, and in addition I had my Nikon N80, rather than being confined to my cameraphone.

CD 451035-0, 452005-2, and 296 in the Snow
Title:  CD 451035-0, 452005-2, and 296 in the Snow
Description:  This shot more than most that Ive done lately illustrates the advantages of shooting film. I like the shot as it was shot, but this lineup of the two different "Pantograph" EMU classes, plus the crane, is better for the internet, so I cropped. The result? The photo is more or less as good as before, in spite of having used 35mm color print film, which other than the 110 stuff that my Fisher-Price used to take, is more or less the bottom-of-the-range when it comes to film technology.

CD 751004-3 and 451004 in the Snow, Picture 2
Title:  CD 751004-3 and 451004 in the Snow, Picture 2
Description:  While I was waiting at the crossing for the train to come, I noticed #751004-3 deadheading 451004 on one of the main tracks, although it was stopped. There was also so MOW equipment on the consist further back. I couldnt tell if the 451 was headed for scrapping, repair, or simply another assignment, but I expect that many 451s will be scrapped soon with the arrival of new "City Elefant" EMUs. The 751 diesels are just as old, though, also dating back to the 1960s. #751004-3 still carries its CSD number on side, this being #T4781004. I dont know if this is for historic purposes (maybe its is slated for preservation), or if its simple laziness, but its interesting anyway.

Cercany Crossing in the Snow, Picture 2
Title:  Cercany Crossing in the Snow, Picture 2
Description:  I happened to be closer to the Cercany crossing (which takes the line to Sazava out of town) when I took this shot, and when the new gates (installed at the end of last year) came down, I took this shot. The wait was considerable for the train, though, as in the Czech Republic it can be a few minutes (not that this means you should do something stupid at a crossing).

Express Pan at Nadrazi Hostivar
Title:  Express Pan at Nadrazi Hostivar

Title:  Express Pan at Nadrazi Hostivar, Picture 4

Seimens M1 Interior, Picture 2,
Title:  Seimens M1 Interior, Picture 2,
Description:  Heres a shot right down the middle of the aisle. The M1s come in two seating configurations that I know of, one without any seats facing inward, and one with them, like this one. To the best of my knowledge, nearly everyone prefers this configuration, as the former obstructs seating, standing, and movement through the coach. Generally speaking, I cant think of what moron would think that using seats not facing inward on a Metro train would be a good idea, as Ive nearly had my knees taken out, or been shoved into the seats by rude people, on multiple occassions. For that matter, I think that ALL of the seats should face in, as on the old Russian Metro trains that were still in use when I moved to Prague. This is the system used on the New York City subway, the Tokyo subway, the Budapest Metro, and most of the London Underground (with the exception of the Metropolitan and East London Lines), so its a no-brainer that its quite standard throughout the world for a reason.

Description:  DPP started to take delivery of their Seimens M1 Metro trains in 1998, but it took until 2003 for them to fully replace the Communist-era trains on the C-Line, or red line. By the time I arrived a few years later, they were already badly vandalised, but since that time theyve been cleaned up. Really, Prague needs more of them, on the C-Line and elsewhere, but DPP are stalling on buying new rolling stock. The trains have become quite overloaded in the past two years, and still the problem continues. On this night, however, the trains were pretty empty because it was too early for the clubbers to be coming home, yet too late for most of them to be heading out, even though it was Saturday.

Description:  This is the southern entrance to the Metro station at Haje. I did the photo shoot at night. Haje was originally called Kosmonautu when it was opened in 1980.

I.P. Pavlova Metro Station
Title:  I.P. Pavlova Metro Station
Description:  This is the I.P. Pavlova Metro station, one of the oldest on the system, built around 1970, if Im not mistaken. Construction of the Metro lasted from about 1967-1974, with service starting between what is now Florenc (then called Sokolovska) and Kacerov in 1974.

Andel Metro Station, Picture 2
Title:  Andel Metro Station, Picture 2
Description:  The ceiling in the platform area of Andel would have no doubt looked quite futuristic in 1977, although I dont know if its original. I brings to mind sci-fi movies of the period.

Andel Metro Station
Title:  Andel Metro Station
Description:  Moskevska station, on the B-Line, now known as Andel, was built between 1977 and 1985, and was one of the original B-Line stations. It also featured more Communist propaganda in its design than any other station, especially the bronzes along the platforms celebrating the Moscow Olympics in 1980, as well as the Soviet space programme. Another theme was the "friendship" or "peace" between Moscow and Prague.......since the Soviet army invaded Prague in 1968 to ensure this would always be the case. In spite of the Soviet Unions fall, and the Velvet Revolution against Communist rule in Czechoslovakia, the modern-day Czech authorities have left the Andel station alone, with the only change being the name change to Andel in 1990.

Luziny Metro Station, Picture 2,
Title:  Luziny Metro Station, Picture 2,
Description:  The Luziny Metro Station, on Line B, was constructed in 1994 as part of the Nove Butovice-Zlicin expansion. Line B actually opened in 1985 on a more limited route from Florenc-Smichovske Nadrazi, and didnt reach its current extent (Zlicin-Cerny Most) until 1998. Kolbenova station is even newer, dating to 2001. In any case, Luziny is on of the most distinctive on the Metro system both because its above ground and because it has these palm trees encased in glass.
