Nadrazi Horovice, Picture 5,
Title:  Nadrazi Horovice, Picture 5,
Description:  This really crude outdoor sink is another steam-era feature of Nadrazi Horovice (a modern station would have a proper drinking fountain). Its looks a bit gross to drink out of, though, even if the sign seems to say that its alright.

Nadrazi Praha-Vysehrad
Title:  Nadrazi Praha-Vysehrad
Description:  As we left on the mainline for Beroun, our first station, as always, was Vysehrad. To the best of my knowledge, this is no longer a scheduled stop, but even though this is the case and the station is so rundown that it looks abandoned, it is still a staffed station, for whatever reason. Even more unusually, we stopped here on this trip, for what reason I dont know. As far as I can tell, theres no legal access to the tracks for the general public anymore, so it couldnt have been for passengers, or could it have?

Description:  As Ive said many times before, steam-era infrastructure pops up everywhere in the Czech Republic. This roundhouse is in Zdice, and I cant tell whether its still in use or not.

View from Zeleznicni Most
Title:  View from Zeleznicni Most
Description:  Soon after passing Vysehrad, the main for Beroun crosses the Zeleznicni Most, the most visible of the rail bridges over the Vltava (as the others are in out-of-the-way neighborhoods). If you look out over the city, its surprising what you can see when you consider that this is a cameraphone image. Every major landmark on the west bank of the Vltava (except for Miklasky Chram) from Stadion Strahov to Prazky Hrad is at least slightly visible, encompassing the neighborhoods of Smichov, Strahov, the Mala Strana, and the Hradcany all at once.

BR Ticket in Dejvicka Metro
Title:  BR Ticket in Dejvicka Metro
Description:  Ive forgotten the full details of why I was in Dejvicka on this particular day, but often this is the first Metro station I get to after flying into Praha Ruzyne airport, although such was not the case on this day. Rather, I discovered a BR (British, Network Rail, etc.) train ticket dropped on the platform. Living in a major European city post-Schengen, you see all sorts of tickets from all the EU countries lying on the ground, but I liked this one because it reminded me of Britain. It wasnt the first one I had seen, and it probably wont be the last. Ive also seen Paris and Brussels metro tickets lying on the floor of Prague Metro stations.

CSD 458004- in the Vagon Kafe
Title:  CSD 458004- in the Vagon Kafe
Description:  This was another preserved numberplate from a CSD Class E458 (now CD Classes 110-111) electric switcher, which I stupidly chopped off. I guess youll have to visit the cafe if you really want to know the number. The real unit may actually still be in service, since this class is alive and well, and this numberplate would now be obsolete due to reclassification.

CSD E6691129 in the Vagon Kafe
Title:  CSD E6691129 in the Vagon Kafe
Description:  This numberplate, off of an old CSD E669 Class electric locomotive (now CD and ZSSK classes 180-183), 6691129, can be found embedded in the floor of the Vagon Kafe in the little known Pasaz EGAP, between the famous Pasaz Lucerna, and KFC. The whole cafe is decorated in a rail theme, which means that, along with the decent coffee and food, its an excellent stopover for railfans. I was actually introduced to it by a train driver, whos standing on the left.

Vagon Kafe Menu
Title:  Vagon Kafe Menu
Description:  In spite of being a Czech rail-themed cafe, the Vagon Kafe features American steam locomotives on the cover of the menu. I dont know what the lower one is exactly, but the top one is clearly a UP 3900-Class Challenger.

Malostranska Metro Station
Title:  Malostranska Metro Station
Description:  In the past two years or so, Ive noticed a really cool 19th-Century-style gas balloon (as opposed to a modern hot air balloon) thats been used for sightseeing over the Mala Strana. The last time I saw it, some idiot had thought it would be a good idea to cover it with grafitti, but this was when it still looked good, there on the upper right. The building in the foreground is the Malostranska Metro station, and the Metrocafe.

CD 714021-3
Title:  CD 714021-3
Description:  While the station makeover at Nadrazi Cercany is quite extensive, the only new trains serving Cercany in 2009 were "City Elephant" liveried Class 471 EMUs, and even they had occassionally worked the main since their introduction to the Ceske Drahy system. The traditional Class 451 and 452 "Pantograph" EMUs, in spite of many predictions that they would be eliminated, continued to cover most of the mainline local services, including the re-classified "S9" service, which was really just a continuation of the Prague-Benesov services that had been running for decades. The branchline services to Sazava, Dobris, and other such places continued to be covered mostly by Class 810 railbuses, and Class 714 diesels like this one pulling 010 Class four-wheel coaches (basically unpowered 810s). The Cercany-Prague services via Vrane nad Vltavou, incidentally, were still also worked by the very old Russian-style bi-level coaches pulled by Class 742 and 749 diesels.

Nadrazi Cercany Renovation
Title:  Nadrazi Cercany Renovation
Description:  Luckily for those who want to see the old stations of the Prague-Ceske Budejovice route preserved, only part of the old Nadrazi Cercany building was knocked down. I dont actually know the age of this station, but you can tell from the woodwork inside that its at least steam era. What remains of the station is being fully modernized, painted, cleaned, and secured, and even in August the project was very far along. In this photo, the only visibly missing component is Kolej (Track) 1.

New Platform Looking North
Title:  New Platform Looking North
Description:  The renovation of Nadrazi Cercany continued apace throughout 2009, and by the end of August the platforms were complete and Nastupiste (Platform) 2 was already operational, as seen here. The passenger subway wasnt open yet (notice the pedestrian crossing in the right background of this picture), as the concrete was still being poured and dried, and the canopy on the Nastupiste 1 still wasnt up. The track construction was looking quite good, though.

New Track Construction
Title:  New Track Construction
Description:  Im not clear on precisely what those plastic tubes were preserving, but if Im remembering right when the tracks were reinstalled some additional signals were added, so maybe they were for wiring. You can also see the old preparation bays and roundhouse on the far left background, unchanged.

Veleslavin Crossing
Title:  Veleslavin Crossing
Description:  This crossing at one end of the Nadrazi Veleslavin yard (out of site to the left) is interesting to photograph, though, as it allows one to combine a train, a crossing, and an interlocking tower in the same shot. Here a Class 814 railbus heads into the station.

CD 363117-3
Title:  CD 363117-3
Description:  Here you can see the size of the cranes being used to build the new station facilities at Cercany, which appear really to be overkill given the small size of most of whats being built. Nevertheless, the reason I posted this shot is that I like how the locomotive, CD #363117-3, looks.

CD Class 130 Electric With Autoracks
Title:  CD Class 130 Electric With Autoracks
Description:  This actually wasnt an all-autorack train, but a manifest with a lot of autoracks in it. I really took this shot for the locomotive, though, even if the cameraphone is too low resolution to get the number. Ive been really surprised at the extent to which older locomotives have been kept running by the new CD Cargo business segment, and Hostivar isnt a bad place to see them in action. Ive even seen Class 120 and 122 electrics from the 1950s.

CD Class 130 Electric With Autoracks, Picture 3
Title:  CD Class 130 Electric With Autoracks, Picture 3
Description:  Here you can get a better view of the autoracks. Surprisingly, in spite of rampant grafitti on Ceske Drahy, no attempt has been made to introduce modern auto carriers with sides and rooves. In the United States, these old style autoracks havent been seen since the 1970s.

New Station Building At Nadrazi Cercany
Title:  New Station Building At Nadrazi Cercany
Description:  In spite of the preservation of the old Nadrazi Cercany, this all-new station building has also been constructed to the south. I dont know if its supposed to be a freight station, but I do note that it has freight doors (out of sight to the right). Its already in use, with CD staff coming and going quite busily.

New Track
Title:  New Track
Description:  Back in Cercany again, I got a shot of Kolej 3, which apparently has been laid will all-new rail (its not even completely rusted if you look carefully) and all new concrete ties, although the previous ties were concrete ones of the same design. The clamps also look to be the same, or at least similar, but the overall effect of this new construction is that you get a much, much nicer ride.

Work Train at Hostivar
Title:  Work Train at Hostivar

CD 842030-9 Interior
Title:  CD 842030-9 Interior
Description:  This was the rather retro-looking interior of our 842 Class DMU. Ceske Drahy has a number of different DMUs, of both diesel-hydraulic and diesel electric classes. 842s are electric, although since this is the passenger compartment it isnt obvious.

Old Tram Tracks At Nadrazi Hostivar
Title:  Old Tram Tracks At Nadrazi Hostivar
Description:  Nadrazi Hostivar is by definition a train station, but adjacent to it is a tram station of the same name. The two arent directly connected, but if you cross a few streets seperating the stations, you can get there easily. On this particular day, October 2nd, the tracks were all getting ripped out and replaced, and as you can see, the standards are pretty high, as these discarded sections arent in terrible shape.

Nadrazi Cernosice
Title:  Nadrazi Cernosice
Description:  By the time we got to Cernosice, I was worn out, so I got on the train and headed home. Cernosice, while not in terrible condition, hasnt gotten the corridor reconstruction treatment yet, so the station still looks somewhat steam era (if it werent for the cantenary), and the tracks are a bit overgrown, even if those blackened ties are in fact concrete.

Nadrazi Cernosice, Picture 3
Title:  Nadrazi Cernosice, Picture 3
Description:  This sign, however, is still vintage. I dont know what era it dates to, but any sign that consists of stenciled paint looks quite old fashioned in the 2000s. I like it, though. I hope they dont get rid of it. This sign is telling the passengers while direction their train will be in so that they wont end up on the wrong platform. Since all trains (that I know of) in the Czech Republic are right-hand-running, and since Nadrazi Cernosice only has two tracks, a sign like this works pretty well for a station like this.

Title:  Nadrazi Cernosice, Picture 5
Description:  The canopy I was waiting under gave me a few other artistic possibilities for shots, even if I was stuck with my cameraphone on this particular day. That yellow box on the station is a validator for tram tickets, if Im not mistaken, since this line is close enough to Prague so that some of them are valid for the trains.

Nadrazi Cernosice, Picture 6
Title:  Nadrazi Cernosice, Picture 6
Description:  Heres another compositional shot. It would be nice if the cantenary mast and the support for the canopywere more level, but oh well...

Old Ticket Windows In Praha Hlavni Nadrazi
Title:  Old Ticket Windows In Praha Hlavni Nadrazi
Description:  All of Praha Hlavni Nadrazis ticket booths used to look like this, with the exception of the long lines of people being harrassed by bums that smelled so bad you could smell them a long time before you could see them. In the past year, the rebuilding of Hlavni Nadrazi has progressed enough so that now none of these are still in use. Instead, a complete German-style travel centre has been set up in the basement, along with still more retail shops to go along with all of the retailers and restaurants on the first and second levels.

CD 700162-1 in Modrany Yard
Title:  CD 700162-1 in Modrany Yard
Description:  There seems to be at least some MOW equipment based in Modrany, in addition to the spine cars that I saw there for containers (From where I dont know. Im assuming the intermodel facility where theyre loaded and unloaded is elsewhere.). The locomotives used for the Modrany MOW trains are exceptionally tiny, this one being a Class 700 diesel that only weighs 22 metric tons.

CD 749011-3 at Modrany Crossing, Picture 2
Title:  CD 749011-3 at Modrany Crossing, Picture 2
Description:  Many branchline services in the Czech Republic are run by Class 749 diesels, which are if anything overkill for the job. They have about 1103kw of power, or about 1479 horsepower, and can run about 100Km/h at maximum speed. The horsepower isnt high for a freight locomotive, and if anything isnt enough, but for hauling only two bi-level coaches at slow speed its quite a lot.
