Both were built by Fairbanks-Morse and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. #9473 is an FP-20A built in June of 1948 and retired in September of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. In this context, they're pulling a fully-loaded mineral train down the Allegheny Mountains and around the Curve on its way to the Eastbound Receiving Yards in Altoona. The photographer's name and the date are not recorded.

Description:  AHC. Here is the second of three successive photos that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in the Summer of 1959. Prominent here is an A-B-A trio of Pennsylvania Railroad AF-16's built by the American Locomotive Company. They are heading back to East Altoona after helping another freight train up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they uncoupled and headed back down the Alleghenies for yet another run up "The Mountain." Also visible is a westbound merchandise freight train pulled by three EMD EFS-17M's and pushed by three ALCo AS-18AM's.

Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8678 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8678 was constructed in April of 1958. They are pushing a merchandise freight train ~ headed by five EMD EFS-17M's ~ up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they will uncouple and return down the Alleghenies to East Altoona for yet another run up the Mountains and back.

Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6126, an EF-36 built by GM-EMD in November of 1966 and rated at 3,600 horsepower. In this context, it's powering a manifest freight train around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West.

Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #6000, #6007, and #6509. All were built during 1965 and rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #6000 and #6007 are EF-25A's built by GM-EMD, whereas #6509 is a GF-25A built by General Electric. In this context, they're rounding the Curve on their way back down to East Altoona for yet another helper or pusher run up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and back.

Shown here (R to L) is Penn Central engine #6519 and another unit whose road number is not recorded. #6519 is a U25C built by General Electric for the Pennsylvania Railroad in December of 1965. They're serving as tail-end pushers on a freight train that's rounding the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, where they'll be uncoupled and returned to East Altoona for yet another helper or pusher run up "The "Mountain."

Description:  AHC. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1968. The photographer is not identified. Both are SD45's built by GM-EMD for the Pennsylvania Railroad and rated at 3,600 horsepower each. #6177 was constructed in December of 1967. They're climbing the Allegheny Mountains and rounding the Curve with a mixed-cargo freight train. Note that the train's on Track 2, which is usually reserved for eastbound traffic. Partially visible at the far right is K-4S "Pacific" #1361.

Description:  AHC. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 30 May 1969. Shown here (L to R) are Penn Central Railroad engines #2233, #6066, #6077, and another unit whose number is not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD for the Pennsylvania Railroad; their PRR road numbers were the same. #2233 is a GP-30 built in April of 1963, rated at 2,250 horsepower, and presently on display (in Conrail colors!) at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg. #6066 and #6077 are both SD-40's built in February of 1966 and rated at 3,000 horsepower each. Here, they are pulling a TrucTrain around the Curve and up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin, Pittsburgh, and points West.

Description:  AHC. Here is an original photo that I took at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, during August of 1973. Shown here are two of my Penn State-Harrisburg classmates: Twyla Jean King and Charles Ottaviano, both of Middletown, Pennsylvania. Behind them is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata in May of 1918, retired in September of 1956 after 2,469,000 miles, enshrined at the Horseshoe Curve in June of 1957, restored for excursion service in April of 1987, withdrawn for safety reasons, disassembled for repairs, and still awaiting resuscitation.

Description:  AHC. Here is an original photo by Larry Moss that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 11 October 1976. Prominent here are AMTK engines #590 and #470-B. Both were built by GM-EMD. #590 is an SDP40F constructed in May of 1974 and rated at 3,000 horsepower. #470 is an E-9B built originally for the Union Pacific Railroad in October of 1955 and rated at 2,400 horsepower. They're rounding the Curve with a passenger train on its way down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. This photo was taken during the time when Track 2 was being removed, hence the presence of the maintenance-of-way equipment parked there.

Description:  AHC. Here is an original 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in November of 1977. At the left is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during May of 1918, retired in September of 1956, enshrined at the Horseshoe Curve on 08 June 1957, restored for excursion service during 1987-1988, withdrawn from service and disassembled because of safety concerns, and still not reassembled/ restored/resurrected. Meanwhile, at the right, a three-unit Conrail TOFC train rounds the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West.

Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad cabin car #980901, an N-6B built in the Altoona Car Shops during August of 1916. It was enshrined at the Curve in early 1964 to remember and honor the many thousands of men and women who labored in the Altoona Works for more than a century. Vandals set it afire in late 1977 ~ but instead of restoring it, the City of Altoona had it towed away and scrapped. What vandals started, bureaucrats finished: destruction of our railroad and cultural history. Alas....
