Album Info:Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the winter of 2019, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

EJE 666
Title:  EJE 666
Description:  An interesting locomotive sorts cars at the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 31 Jan. '19. This view would have been prevented by the dominating silhouette of the original Neenah Foundry facility, later known as Plant 1, which stood here for over ¾’s of a century. Established in 1872 as Aylward Plow Works (a.k.a. Aylward & Sons) at 120 N. Lake St., they erected a new foundry at 500 W. Winneconne Ave. in 1918 “in a rural area of southwestern Neenah.” The name of Neenah Foundry was adopted in 1922. Expanded numerous times over the years, it became Plant 1 in 1960 when Plant 2 was constructed in the then rural area at the intersection of Byrd Ave. and the aptly named Aylward St. (followed by Plant 3 in 1967). Plant 1 was closed in 1994, it stood abandoned for a while and was eventually demolished.

CN 2831
Title:  CN 2831
Description:  A CN unit train of autoracks passes the Main St. overpass and leans into the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 1 Feb. '19. Train had two locomotives, CN 2831 pulling and CN 3136 mid-train. The north leg of the wye bisects the scene. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry Soo Line (SOO) depot are partially visible at right. The rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties rest atop the remnants of the foundation. The masonry depot was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. The Edward Smith Octagon House, 347 Smith St., is partially visible under the overpass at left. The house was erected between 1851 and 1854. Edward Smith, who operated a flour mill and had an early interest in the Neenah Paper Co., purchased the home in 1855. It has been owned by the Neenah Historical Society since 1993.

BNSF 4350, BNSF 8830, CN 5676
Title:  BNSF 4350, BNSF 8830, CN 5676
Description:  A CN through freight parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it heads north past the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 6 Feb. '19. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train to the right. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St. used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

CN 7027
Title:  CN 7027
Description:  A CN local parallels 4th St. and crosses Appleton St. while working in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 6 Feb. '19. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously. Intertape Polymer Group (IPG), 741 4th St., is partially visible in the background, at the opposite end of the yard.

Lake St., is partially visible in the background at right. Up until 2009, this train would have been obscured by the P. H. Glatfelter Co. paper mill, which stood here for 135 years (the oldest part of the original mill was constructed in 1874). Glatfelter purchased the mill from Bergstrom Paper Co. in 1979. Bergstrom had purchased the mill, originally Winnebago Paper, in 1904. Glatfelter moved the jobs to Ohio in June 2006, the mill stood idle for about two years until it was torn down (demolition was completed in May 2009).

CN 8894, et al.
Title:  CN 8894, et al.
Description:  A CN unit train of tank cars approaches the Main St. overpass as it traverses the S-curve at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 15 Feb. '19. Train had three locomotives, CN 8894 and BNSF 4466 pulling as well as another CN pushing. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot can be seen to the left of the train. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. Eggers Industries, originally Hardwood Products Co., 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is visible in the background at left. Clearwater Paper Corp., formerly Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16)), an active rail customer, is partially visible in the background at right.

IC 3120
Title:  IC 3120
Description:  A CN local crosses Kaukauna St. and is about to disappear behind the former Noffke Lumber facility as it heads southwest via former joint MILW/SOO rails at Menasha, WI on 17 Feb. '19. It was a chance encounter. If I had been able to park a few seconds sooner, I would have been able to capture the business end of the locomotive before it started to become obscured.

Title:  CN 2109
Description:  A CN container train crosses Kampo Rd. as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 18 Feb. '19. Train had two locomotives, CN 2338 pulling and CN 2109 mid-train. Something must have happened to the number board above the engineer's side of the cab, because the current number board is hand written. The former C&NW main line (now relegated to a passing siding) runs parallel on the other side of the train.

Title:  GTW 5812
Description:  A CN local passes the station sign as it heads northeast via former SOO rails at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing (originally Town of Menasha until 14 Apr. '16), Winnebago Co., WI on 19 Feb. '19. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The locomotive is about to pass that turnout and transition to the former C&NW rails to head for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna.

Description:  A CN local approaches Towmen Rd. as it heads northeast at Shawano Junction, Fox Crossing (originally Town of Menasha until 14 Apr. '16), Winnebago Co., WI on 19 Feb. '19. This spot used to be named Fox River Junction, after several segments of the original C&NW main line through Menasha and Neenah were removed and a turnout was installed here (out-of-frame to the right) which allows the bypass of missing C&NW rails by using former SOO rails. The locomotive is passing that turnout and transitioning to the former C&NW rails to head for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. The almost completely snow-covered SOO rails continue toward Shawano, WI at lower left. The old, leaning sign next to the block signals at right says Junction One Mile (referring to Winchester Rd./Hwy. II, labeled as Winnebago Junction on some old maps). The facility in the background at left used to receive rail service via C&NW rails, but has not had a spur for quite some time.

Description:  A trio of colorful visitors from out-of-town lead a unit train of tank cars past the Hwy. G overpass and parallel to Hwy. 41 while headed southwest via CN, former C&NW, rails at Snells, WI on 3 Mar. '19. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former SOO rails can be seen running parallel along this side of the train.
