Album Info:Most, if not all, of the photographs in this album were captured in Northeast Wisconsin in the winter of 2019, so they are mostly CN operating on former C&NW, GB&W, MILW, and SOO rails. Once in a while I try to catch ELS and WSOR on former MILW rails too.

CN 9455
Title:  CN 9455
Description:  A CN local parallels W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd./N. Lake St. (just out-of-frame to the left) and passes the approaches of the Roland Kampo Bridge (a.k.a. the Polish Connection) at the Hwy. 41/Hwy. 10/Hwy. 441 (a.k.a. Tri-County Expressway) interchange as it heads northeast with 34 cars via former C&NW rails at Stroebe, WI on 11 Jan. '19. Stroebe is a railroad station in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI until 14 Apr. '16 (not Outagamie Co., where Stroebe was erroneously placed on this site)). The interchange opened to traffic on 30 Nov. '75, at the time it was simply a bridge to provide access to Hwy. 41 from Menasha. When Hwy. 10 was reconstructed and relocated ca. '97, this interchange was not simultaneously reconstructed to form a full interchange. It was recently reconstructed and expanded; the new, now full interchange was dedicated on 11 Jul. '18. The former SOO rails run parallel to the right (partially visible beyond the tall grass). W. Butte des Morts Beach Rd. becomes N. Lake St. underneath the Polish Connection. Modern maps tend to omit the W. for some reason, it is also absent on the current street sign, some old maps include the W., some old maps omit the W. The local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute and Kaukauna.

Description:  A pair of foreigners lead a through freight along Union St. past the former Sherry St. grade crossing as they back into the north end of the CN, former SOO, yard at Neenah, WI on 12 Jan. '19. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., stands at left. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 (construction commenced the previous year). It was briefly (ca. ‘93) known as the Northern Pacific Hotel, almost certainly a reference to the short-lived corporate relationship between the WC and NP railroads. It was owned by Ole M. Lyken by ’14; it was known as the Lyken Hotel ca. ‘20. Circa ‘23-‘24 it was a grocery store owned by Mrs. Mary E. Lyken, Ole’s widow (he passed away in ’23). From at least ‘28 until ‘39, it was the Mayerl Grocery, owned by Mayme Mayerl. At some point it was turned into a tavern and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. Previous names of the bar include (in no particular order), Susie’s Trackside, Chesapeake Pub, Gigi’s, Mychal’s Bar (Mychal’s On Sherry Street), Sit and Sip Tavern, et al. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. (just out-of-frame to the left); it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St. used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

Description:  A CN local parallels 4th St. and crosses Appleton St. while working in the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 18 Jan. '19. I am rather fond of the haggard signal relay case. The facility partially visible in the background at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s. It could be serviced by the SOO and MILW simultaneously.

Description:  Looking northwest at the north end of the Wiouwash State Trail, the former C&NW right-of-way, at Hortonville Junction, WI on 20 Jan. '19. The parking lot for the trail head is partially visible at right. There used to be a full wye here at Hortonville Junction. This is the approximate location of the turnout which formed the west and east legs of the wye. The north leg of the wye, beyond the tree line in the background, is still in use as a branch line operated by the CN from Appleton to New London. The Wiouwash State Trail extends 22 miles from here into downtown Oshkosh.

Description:  A CN local passes the former N. Union St. grade crossing as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 24 Jan. '19. The historic Tuttle Press Co. factory, 600 E. Hancock St., stands at right. Founded at Elgin, IL, in 1898, they moved to Appleton in ‘01, where they built a facility next to the Wisconsin Tissue Paper Co. on John St. They constructed a new facility here at N. Union St. and E. Hancock St. in ’05. Over the years the factory grew until it occupied the entire city block, as it does now. A. F. Tuttle, founder and president, invented the first multi-color web printing press for printing tissue paper. The company was purchased by Northern Paper Mills, Green Bay, on 18 Sep. ‘29. Fox Valley Corp., nothing but a vile holding company, purchased it at some point prior to the mid-‘70s. It continued to operate as Tuttle Press Co. until early ‘83, when the holding company merged it with George S. Carrington Co. of Leominster, Mass., to form Artfaire. Fox Valley Corp. moved this facility’s production to one of their other subsidiaries in Tenn. around 1990. The facility then became Sulpaco West, Inc., part of Sullivan Paper Co. in Mass. They shuttered this facility on 27 Jun. ’02, when they moved its production to one of their other facilities in Mass. For about a century the facility produced a variety of renowned specialty papers: napkins, table covers, tissue, craft paper, paper dolls, gift boxes, crepe paper and especially gift wrapping paper. There hadn’t been any business signs on the building for several years. Mach IV Motors, LLC, currently occupies some or all of the facility.

Title:  GTW 4616
Description:  A CN local passes the Main St. overpass and traverses an s-curve via the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 27 Jan. '19. The locomotive is passing the remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened.

Description:  A CN container train approaches N. Lake St. as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 27 Jan. '19. Train had two locomotives, CN 3013 pulling and CN 3117 pushing. I'm left to wonder why the left number board is covered with cardboard. The boxcars at right rest in a small ancillary yard behind Clearwater Paper Corp., historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI until 14 Apr. '16)).

Description:  A neat and interesting string of shiny, new WFRX 3-bay covered hoppers, leased by Grains Connect Canada, were part of the consist of a through freight paralleling Hwy. 41 and approaching the Hwy. G overpass while headed northeast via CN, former SOO, rails at Snells, WI on 30 Jan. '19. Snells, formerly known as Snell’s Station or Snell’s Crossing, is now little more than a map dot in the Town of Neenah, Winnebago Co. This small, rural community once included a post office, depot, cheese factory, sawmill, school, and stockyard. It does not look like any real remnants of the original community remain. Even the station sign, erected after the depot was removed, is gone. The former C&NW rails run parallel on other side of the train. Grains Connect Canada is a relatively new "strategic joint venture between GrainCorp (originally from Australia and big in the malting business) and the Zen-Noh Grain Corp. (a subsidiary of the Japanese agricultural co-operative Zen-Noh)."
