BNSF 4005 / BNSF 8072
Title:  BNSF 4005 / BNSF 8072
Description:  BNSF 4005 leading her northbound triple-header covered hopper (and possibly one or two oddities tossed in for some reason) past BNSF 8072 in the old passing lane/long-ladder run-around on a very busy Sunday morning. The faster first northbound double-header on her portside continues the rush through the eye of the needle.

BNSF 4164
Title:  BNSF 4164
Description:  BNSF 4164 third-of-three on southbound mixed freight in a better view than the CP shot showing the tiny slot the approaching second covered hopper trio will slip into between the passing lane and the currently empty mainline next to her, followed by the rapidly retreating first northbound covered hopper group, tailend of a sorted oilcan, shifting covered hopper splitting up into the ladder in the background... and one of the weirdest optical illusions Ive seen from up on the over-pass, because when you look down, you see the "ground" moving at all different rates by the time the slower covered hopper group hits the bridge opening below making the three neighboring lanes a flat of covered hopper walks-n-tops sliding north at three different rates - not one for vertigo, but it was a little tough on the balance staring over the edge at it.

BNSF 4467 - CP 8507 - BNSF 4164
Title:  BNSF 4467 - CP 8507 - BNSF 4164
Description:  BNSF 4467 - CP 8507 - BNSF 4164 triple on pause in the passing lane just before a plethora of action Sunday morning - what a great day to choose morning services instead of evening! Unfortunately I only have 18 minutes and counting before the bells toll. No problem... until that single set of lights in the distance on the other side of the bridge separates into two on-coming consists. Dang... and glancing out to the service area shows a whole pen full of units waiting to show up on a camera sensor. Double dang. (It also made it much harder than usual to select which images to put up to represent each unit/group, so if you have any special interest in any of these, holler and Ill see what I can do to fill any requests.)

BNSF 4467 - CP 8507 - BNSF 4164
Title:  BNSF 4467 - CP 8507 - BNSF 4164
Description:  BNSF 4467 - CP 8507 - BNSF 4164 remains in the passing lane, the last glimmer of BNSF 5526 at the back of the fast northbound covered hopper consist in the distance on the now opening lane (just a handful of cars in front of the distant light tree) and the slower northbound BNSF 4005 triple-header gets a little breathing room as she passes off her port-bow. The remaining covered hopper sort shifting into the north ladder sort yard snakes into the frame (the new turn-table is immediately to the left of the frame). And thats all the time we have before the bells toll and signal were late.

BNSF 5152 - BNSF 4820
Title:  BNSF 5152 - BNSF 4820
Description:  BNSF 5152 - BNSF 4820 duo working the front of a mostly covered hopper group going back and forth in the yard - soon to be moving much further north (to her front) pulling out of the middle yard group through the pinch below 39th Street over-pass and adding to the covered hopper flow below the bridge in a few moments. And note the sun attempting to rise on Sunday morning... in the middle of November. Usually we dont expect to see the sun or a break in the rain until next May.

BNSF 5526
Title:  BNSF 5526
Description:  BNSF 5526 pushing on the fast-first double-header northbound covered hopper consist as she slips past the slower triple-header northbound covered hopper (well, except those couple oddities tossed into the middle) consist while the sorting covered hopper group to the rear shows the early split off the batch out into the ladder and north yards. A set of units on the turn-table spur visible in the distance behind the service/refilling station back in the frame and mist lighting up on a Sunday morning.

BNSF 8072 / BNSF 4005 / BNSF 8852 action introduction
Title:  BNSF 8072 / BNSF 4005 / BNSF 8852 action introduction
Description:  BNSF 8072 (paperweight in the ladder entrance/old passing lane) - BNSF 4005 (slower triple with west-to-northbound covered hopper group at the point (front axle hitting the cross-over in this frame) slipping over to the eastern main-line) - BNSF 8852 (fastest as a double header on covered hopper line slipping along the western main-line, and the passing lane (over to the right - passing lane traffic takes the turn-out at the lower right of the frame, otherwise it continues to "slop" and squiggle) which currently holds BNSF 4467 triple-header with a southbound mixed freight waiting for a clear... this is the set the stage shot so you can loosely grasp whats where for the next fifteen minutes - far off to the left is the service/maintenance area and further back to the left (also out of the frame) is the power corral. The Vancouver Amtrak Station would be on the other side of the tracks (behind the lights of the on-coming train) next to the bridge guard green BNSF SD splot in the distance visible below the light tree and 4th Plain Blvd (which blocks the other auto bridge/over-pass (Padden Parkway/Mill Plain Blvd). Whew - follow all that?

CP 8507
Title:  CP 8507
Description:  CP 8507 in second place on southbound mixed freight in the passing lane - and being passed by two northbound covered hopper groups plus another covered hopper string and tailend of an oil can being shifted behind them at the start of the north yard making it a challenge to get these particular units into the viewfinder between warehouse roofs (rooves? ruffs? exterior ceilings?). Of course, more importantly: can you believe it? After all my work at hints, insider jokes, and what-not... CP / Canadian Pacific undercuts my BNSF purchase of NS / Norfolk Southern! Dang. Missed your chance, Mr Buffet... then again, guess theres still time, but not much, since the CP buyout of NS has already made popular news (meaning its possibly six months to a year old news now that I see it in print). And what kind of livery is Canolk Pacuthern going to use? Wait - they have the dirty look down pat between them, so maybe it was a match made in Heaven. Darn - just realized, more losses to anything except the first few letters of the alphabet (AMTK, BNSF, CP... KCS & UP are working to be the only non-ABCentric railways? (I know - theres bound to be others, but what we see up here in the Pacific Northwest).

KCS 4831
Title:  KCS 4831
Description:  KCS 4831 second place of three at the front of a southbound mixed freight starting to gain speed moving out of the northern yard in Vancouver under early evening skies and minimal light (giving credit to the little pocket snapper, at that level of zoom and ISO 1600 and 1/100 as the fastest I could push it, not too bad (... fine, not too good, either... but it IS a KCS and it is NOT raining... and, uh, that IS a stinkeye, and not from Rail Police for once... what time do Sunday services start? UP 5690 - UP 8684 - UP 5406
Title:  UP 5690 - UP 8684 - UP 5406
Description:  UP 5690 - UP 8684 - UP 5406 triple bursting out of the fog a few ticks before 11AM on a foggy winter morning in late November with a northbound double-stack headed back to the Puget Sound for outbound ship loading now that Portland is laying dormant. Speaking of which, the local Portland container distributors have invested a significant chunk of change subsidizing a barge-container traffic route from further up the Columbia River in an effort to administer last-ditch CPR to our local intermodal container traffic in Portland - supposedly the plan calls for 100% financial support for the first year or so until it is paying for itself (snerk!)... although rumor has it, no one is holding their breath in this final attempt to keep Portland alive and part of the intermodal traffic flow. While Im doubtful, Id like it to live as train traffic would have to continue then out of Portland up through Vancouver to get to the next closest stable/developed deep-water port (Seattle/Tacoma)... even if it means less traffic along the Columbia River spots (although last trip up the Gorge, almost looked like it had already hit... fewer than three consists in either direction during a three or four hour trip along the south (Union Pacific) side... and to get three I had to count the BNSF traffic on the opposite shore (north side of the river), otherwise, I wouldnt even get to three.

BNSF 7995
Title:  BNSF 7995
Description:  BNSF 7995 showing up in third position headed south with a container train currently paused in the dark mid-morning light (amazing what even a small pocket snapper camera with mild software tweaking can bring out of darkness... although between crooked/slanted light & power poles, sloping guardrails, fighting chain-link fence to put the camera lens through, driving rain and howling winds, Im not sure if the grand designer really wants level images with perfect horizon. Yes, thats it, deities dont like perfection in mankind, so Im actually doing my part to SAVE humankind by proving were imperfect and the slanted horizon is necessary. That or its an artistic statement.)

BNSF 4433
Title:  BNSF 4433
Description:  BNSF 4433 the soggy tail-end on the northbound covered hopper consist parked in the passing lane waiting to depart into the descending fall of night. Note that its not foggy - thats rain diffusion in the background. The heavy rain of the past two weeks virtually eliminating our previous ten months of drought and bringing our annual rainfall back to average after being nearly a foot behind schedule. This must be how the rest of the world works, and Im not complaining after months of wonderfully dry shooting conditions - guess I can put up with a few weeks of solid heavy rain.

Title:  BNSF 7947 - BNSF 7645
Description:  BNSF 7947 - BNSF 7645 front pair on a northbound covered hopper consist paused in the passing lane along Fruit Valley Road waiting on green. And for once, dont blame the photographer... or the camera, for that matter, for the degradation of the image. Its raining so hard in windy conditions it difficult to keep the lens dry for more than a quick snap or two before camera, lens, and photographer are drenched - not to mention, without higher shutter speed, its nearly impossible to see this pair over the hill clearly.

BNSF 7947
Title:  BNSF 7947
Description:  BNSF 7947 at the front of a sopping wet pair of paused power units aimed north midway past three in the afternoon. And looking at the original image, those number boards are blurred due to camera movement or optics - its pouring rain diffusing the brighter light coming from the number board lights illuminating the surrounding droplets diffusing any direct path of light. The lack of accumulated water around the well-drained ballast hides the deluge well.

The trio paused between consists just north of the 39th Street bridge Im currently using for a brief moment of cover from the rain while trying to clean the lens and figure out my own stupidity for leaving early to church "so I could have at least 30 minutes of almost daylight" before darkness falls in another 15-20 minutes... turned out to be thirty extra minutes to perfect my wet dog smell which I achieved far quicker than expected wearing Sunday Goin-To-Meetin clothes. To all those seated in the neighboring pews, I apologize for putting serious pew into those same pews (honestly - in some societies wet dog smell is the aroma of royalty!).

Description:  BNSF 8019 - BNSF 6975 (yes... in that order... static images can tell a much different story than reality!) in double-reverse elephant fashion at the rear of a northbound (to the right) covered hopper group motivating out of Vancouver... very slowly. Slowly enough for us to finish snapping this picture, climb in the car, drive north several country blocks in time to catch this pair again as they were just starting to pick up speed along Lake Shore Drive - in this shot, they are just departing the north yard area at the transition from Fruit Valley Road to Lake Shore Drive with the overpass (to the right of the frame).

Description:  BNSF 4138 at the front of a foursome mixed freight flowing north in the rainy winter conditions at the neck of the north yard section - which of course, to get an acceptable picture, you have to step five feet OUT of the protection of the overpass and into the rain to snap the shutter.

BNSF 4639
Title:  BNSF 4639
Description:  BNSF 4639 in the middle of three on the front of a mixed freight slowly chugging north (to the left of the frame, contrary to what the wind, rain, and radiator steam might suggest) under dreary skies. Contrary to my first impression, that white symbol directly behind the starboard cab in black (near the roof) is *not* the picture the bathroom man indicating successful hunts for port-a-johns stuck on the rails, but an unfortunate optical illusion of several warning and instruction stickers (seriously? On a technical piece of machinery, which is touched only by highly skilled people in a locked down environment? Where was my warning sticker on the lawnmower sparkplug lead when younger when I was handed it with, "Here, hold this while I pull the starter cord...") - oh, and I guess dont pee in the electrical cabinet of the Dash-9, no matter what this symbol may suggest.

BNSF 4746
Title:  BNSF 4746
Description:  BNSF 4746 on point of a triple-header with northbound mixed freight, idling forward in the steady rain along Fruit Valley Road, tiptoeing northward between reds (to be found in another half-hour or more in Felida paused yet again).

BNSF 4822
Title:  BNSF 4822
Description:  BNSF 4822 in second out of four on northward mixed freight duty a bit after nine in the morning, although its dark enough to suggest a much earlier or later time. Amazing what thick rain clouds will do to your light.

BNSF 4992
Title:  BNSF 4992
Description:  BNSF 4992 as three-of-four on mixed freight elephant-style northbound - and demonstrating how close I am to ALMOST being under the protection of the 39th Street overpass from the weather. Instead, Im in the perfect place to catch both the rain AND the large drips coming off the concrete above. Sometimes youre lucky... other times, youre me. But Im not complaining! All that sun from April to November was worth it, I dont want to sound ungrateful, Im just a little awed at how easily those huge drops of cold water manage to hit that tiny little opening between coat collar and the back of ones neck.

Title:  BNSF 8965 - BNSF 6416 - BNSF 4305
Description:  BNSF 8965 - BNSF 6416 - BNSF 4305 trio of power with northbound line of covered hoppers at 4:30 Sunday night under rainy skies - and Im still shocked at what the little Cannon pocket snapper can pull out of the dark.

BNSF 5000
Title:  BNSF 5000
Description:  BNSF 5000 as second place at the front of a southbound double-stack... and is it me, or is it a little bit of a let-down when a cool registry number is just another normal livery paint job? Although I shouldnt really complain since her lead sister is sporting quite the patch of primer oxide red over the cylinder panels. Oh, and its not currently raining after nearly four weeks of the wet stuff. Eh, fine, pumpkin orange on #5000 is perfectly fine.
