Roundhouse. Here is an original photo that I took in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 26 June 1965. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #2249, #2229, and #2206. All are EF-22's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,250 horsepower each. All were built in 1963: #2249 in May, #2229 in April, and #2206 in March. They're on their way to couple onto a 160-car eastbound mixed-cargo freight train with cabin car #477243. Relegated to the background are the venerable steam-era Water Tower and what's left of the East Altoona Roundhouse. For around fifty years, it had 50 stalls and its workers maintained steam locomotives 24/7/365! |
