| Here is another Hoosier-related photo of Nickel Plate Road (NY, Chicago & St Louis) 4-6-4 Hudson #174 that used to be a common sight in Indiana. Lima built this beautiful 4-6-4 Hudson in November of 1929 as the second Nickel Plate Road #174. It had its drivers increased from 73" to 74" in 1937,"elephant ear" smoke deflectors were added in January of 1946 and roller bearings were added to the truck in Septemer bo 1946. The loco was finally "laid up" (retired) in June of 1958. Small irregularity in its final disposition. One source as the loco being sold on 12/4/1959 to Louisiana Eastern Railroad. while another source has it being scrapped in the late 1950's with the tender surviving and in the Age of Steam Roundhouse. The photo was taken by railfan Buckley. |
