PRR 5818, BH-50, 1955

BYC. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred R. Kern that was taken just West of the Brick Yard Crossing in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 23 July 1955. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #5818 and another "Centipede" whose number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5818 was built in January of 1948 and retired in April of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. In this context, they're braking a fully-loaded mineral train down the Allegheny Mountains to the Eastbound Receiving Yards in Altoona.
