The coal train came to a stop just north of Palmer Lake to hold for a northbound. I got him here one last time.
But still expansive. The coal train rolls south past some typical Colorado landforms.
The vastness of the landscape dwarfs a 135 car coal train as it makes its way south toward Texas
There are several places between Larkspur and Palmer Lake where there are some good, wide views of the line. It runs just a little way out in the plains, not really in the mountains, though even in the foothill regions, the elevation gets pretty high. Were looking toward the east as the train approaches Palmer Lake
I moved on down to Larkspur, where this Santa Fe lettered overpass crosses the local road I was on. Got the power crossing, verrryyyyy slowly as he made his way upgrade. The line tops out upward of 7000 feet.
After getting the previous shot, I went down to pull a U turn with the RV, to find the train was just starting to move. OK, cool, the chase is on. The head end passes Castle Rock, a prominent formation on the way from Denver to Colorado Springs.
I had finished my chase of UP 4014 the day before, and was now starting home after spending a couple hours on the RTD in the morning. As I approached Castle Rock, I saw this coal train over on the Joint Line, and got off to get a couple of shots. It was holding at a signal, so easy pickings here.

Like to see the MAC's lead!
Nice to see a MAC leading.
Rolling west through Burlington Iowa.
BNSF 5922 and an executive 70Mac lead this empty UCEX coal train around the curve at Mp. 51 on the BNSF Hannibal Sub. just south of Old Monroe, Mo. This is still one of my favorite locations along the line and probably will be for a long time.
