#1361. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 3 October 1987. In the foreground is former Pennsylvania Railroad engine #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during May of 1918, retired in September of 1956, enshrined at the Horseshoe Curve on 8 June 1957, and restored for excursion service in April of 1987. Passing by the AMTRAK Passenger Station is an eastbound trailer train pulled by three Conrail locomotives: #6311, #6485, and #5059. Photo taken from the 12th Street Footbridge.
As the crewmen of 6311 watch the crowd awaiting T-1 4-8-4 #2102, CR pushers SD35 6039, SD40 6311, SD45 6204, and SD40 6308 pound up Horseshoe on May 22, 1977.
BUOI rolls over the summit at appropriately named Gulf Summit behind a pair of SD 40s. Something is lined up westbound, probably OIBU at this time of day, as the westbound home signal shows clear.
I always liked the view of this through truss, but didnt shoot many trains here, such as this BUOI. The problem was, you had to stand on the shoulder of NY 17 to get the shot. Not a good idea, and the state troopers will tell you that as they write the ticket for parking on the highway.
