BNSF 5815 - Former LNG Unit
BNSF 5815 leads this AECX coal load into Old Monroe, Mo. on the BNSF Hannibal Sub.
This unique lashup was on the head end of a stopped eastbound freight in Long Lake. I thought they only used two new units for the LNG units? Only the second unit from the left is clearly marked as such.
The tank car (coupled to BNSF 5815) and this older unit hitching a ride to Minneapolis from Willmar were part of the head end lashup on an eastbound BNSF freight I came across after the dispatcher stopped the train in town. I wonder if the crew on the lead unit took time to admire the hoar frost on the nearby trees?
Close up of the lead units on a stopped eastbound freight I came across on a foggy and frosty February 1st, 2016. I find it interesting that the 5815 is labeled as a "dual fuel" unit.
BNSF's experimental liquid natural gas test set currently operating in between Northtown and Duluth reposes beneath remarkably clear and mild early March skies. I can't see railroads going back to tenders of any sort for their locomotives, do you? Still, this set is quite photogenic to say the least.
