A note on the back states "Frisco 221 - 4-4-0 at St L. yards, stored. Built by Alco-Rhode Island Wrks in 1903. This type hauled The Meteor in early years." This may have been the last photo taken of the locomotive before it went to the scrapper's torch two years later. Alco-Rhode Island did build this 4-4-0 American type steam locomtoive in June of 1903 originally as St Louis, Memphis & South Eastern #221 (serial #27821). The StLM & SE merged into the St Louis-San Francisco in 1905 although the loco kept the same number. It lasted on the SLSF roster until being scrapped in September of 1934 at St Louis, MO after nearly 31 years of service. Specs - SLSF class 220, 69" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 19x26" cylinders, engine wt of 143,400 lb and modest tractive force of 23,100 lb. The photo is by rail fan P.A. Wobus from Manchester, MO.
