This is a photo of the beautifully restored Reading 4-4-0 camelback #343 in 1937. Reading Company Shops built this high cab 4-4-2 camelback but there is a discrepancy in several sources as to when this loco was built. WWW.Steamlocomotive.com lists the build year as 1912 while Trains Magazine "Guide to North American Steam Locomotives" lists it as 1906. Nevertheless, this photo was dated on the front as 9/11/1937 and it appears that the locomotive was restored to its original looks, possibly for publicity reasons. Specs - 86" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 23x27: cylinders, engine wt of 220,500 lb and tractive effort of 28,234 lb. Does anyone know why this loco was restored in 1937? Was it part of an anniversaty celebration?
