BRP 4-4-2 #165 - Buffalo, Rochester, & Pittsburgh Rwy
Title:  BRP 4-4-2 #165 - Buffalo, Rochester, & Pittsburgh Rwy
Description:  Here's a good looking and clean example of an Atlantic type locomotive built in 1903 by Alco-Schenectady for the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh Rwy. Specifics - W-3 class, 72" drivers, 19½x26" cylinders (2), 200 psi boiler pressure, engine weight of 176,680 lb, tractive effort of 23,343 lb. It was acquired by B&O in 1932 and later renumbered #1489. The loco was finally taken out of service on April 2, 1935 and sold for scrap to DuBois Scrap Iorn & Metals Co. No photographer listed and the date is approximate.

BO 4-6-2 #5261 - Baltimore & Ohio
Title:  BO 4-6-2 #5261 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  This 4-6-2 Pacific stands in the Lincoln Park yard in Rochester, NY, on a cold winter day although the photo lists Lincoln Park, IL as the location. With Jim Ford's help (see comment below), I have it correctly labeled now. Originally built by Alco-Brooks in 1923 for the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh line as their #676, it's number was changed when it was eventually absorbed into the B&O roster in 1932 as a P-19 class member. No date or photographer listed so an approximate date was used.

NYC DICCS map 1965 Rochester Zone P
Title:  NYC DICCS map 1965 Rochester Zone P
Description:  This map shows the Abandon from zone Q (lower left hand corner) up to the main line (zone J) as noted as it crosses Platt St. (right side above the title block) with the area in between collectively known as the Kent St. yards. NYC MofW equipment was stored between Brown and Platt streets in later years - old passenger cars and other stuff, most in jade green and others in gray. All of this trackage and Kent St. itself are all gone today. The soccer stadium is at one end and the baseball stadium the other, with Brown Square in the middle.

NYC DICCS map 1965 Rochester Zone Q
Title:  NYC DICCS map 1965 Rochester Zone Q
Description:  The single track Charlotte line is all that remains today. Everything else is ripped up, paved over or buried in the weeds. Hague, Murray, Child and Whitney streets were crossings at grade level. The Abandon rose at that point and bridges carried the line over Orchard, Broad (mistakenly labeled as "Mague" on the DICCS), the canal, Moore and Oak streets. After Oak St., the line dropped down to grade level on its way to the Kent St. yard.

C&O 7068 leads a cut of F's out of Kodak September 1965
Title:  C&O 7068 leads a cut of F's out of Kodak September 1965
Description:  C&O 7068 in experimental black & white paint scheme pulling out of the B&O lead at Kodak. I'm standing on the south side of the ridge, looking to the north (and a little west). L.B. Finewood is across the street. Keep in mind the switch to Kodak was on the north side of the ridge at that time, meaning the B&O had two tracks that crossed at grade - the main and the lead into Kodak. The handsome F is in charge of 4-5 others on a Saturday or Sunday unit coal train equipped with road power. Notice the engineer's hand dangling on a nice late summer day. The "flare" is (was) an all too common attribute of roll film when mishandled either installing or removing from the camera, in this case a 127 Brownie.

Title:  Saturday unit train (coal) to Kodak - 1 of 2 - September 1965
Description:  With a whopping all-Alco 7-unit A-B-A-B-B-B-A lashup, the crew finished with Kodak, then headed north to Charlotte. This is the return trip in the afternoon at the Dewey Ave. crossing. Note the Chevron sign in the background, just over the 50's Pontiac. This is the last round-up for NYC Alco FAs and FBs. Most did not make it into PC.

NYC DICCS map 1965 - Zone "K"
Title:  NYC DICCS map 1965 - Zone "K"
Description:  We’ll start with this DICCS map from 1965. Service to Pfaudler was most visible at the front of the plant on West Ave. (the K-52-1 location). I’m not sure what the track agreements were at any given time, but both the NYC and the B&O (Chessie) served this spur. The back of the plant was mostly inaccessible to the public. I’m not sure what railroad(s) served the various leads (NYC, B&O, PRR?) back there – I never saw anything and obviously never got a photograph. Nothing remains today except weeds and a couple of tracks buried in the pavement behind the plant (visible with any bird's eye map view).

Title:  Stopped at Romig's for lunch - 1 of 2 - June 1966
Description:  Single stack B&O 9411 (B&O class SE-3, according to the stenciling above the builder's plate) idles behind Romig's while the crew is at lunch. The NP boxcars are destined for Matthews & Fields on Stonewood. In the background, note the poplar trees that dot the property line between the cemetery and the NYC Charlotte branch, just a stone's throw on the other side of the engine. Poplars attract lighting strikes like no other (lots of water content), so they have become less desirable as border plantings.

Stopped at Romig's for lunch - 2 of 2 - June 1966
Title:  Stopped at Romig's for lunch - 2 of 2 - June 1966
Description:  Today, Romig's Tavern occupies the entire plaza building on Bennington. In the summer of 1966 however, Romig's had only one storefront out of many businesses in the plaza, located about in the middle. Other businesses at that time (they came and went over the years, of course) included a TV repair shop (where we picked up scrap TV parts for our model railroad needs), a liquor store, a barbershop, and (Mary) Creasy's Beauty Shoppe, the last located at the end of the building, right next to the tracks. The end of the plaza casts an afternoon shadow on C2602 while the crew is inside Romig's for lunch.

B&O 9610
Title:  B&O 9610
Description:  Exact date unknown. Probably summer 1966. This was a Saturday move, lighter than most. The crew has finished its Kodak work and is leaving for the day. In order, 9610, a single Matthews & Fields load (NP boxcar), the caboose, and a string of Kodak go-aways to be left on the main between McCall and the Ridge while the crew heads north. Remarkably, Wehner Mower is still a going concern 50 some odd years later !!
