Description:  A pair of ex PC units lead an Eastbound around the curve at the West end of the Portage Bridge. The photo was taken from atop the Eastbound signal that once stood at the West end of the bridge. The new grade for the replacement bridge will probably swing over to the left and across the original grade that is visible under the pole line.

Description:  A Westbound CR freight is working hard as it blasts around the curve at the East end of the Portage Bridge. There was no 10mph slow order in effect at this time for trains crossing the bridge. A moment after this photo was taken the train passed thru the spring switch, which was the West end of double track, and roared out across the Portage Bridge.

Coal on the high bridge
Title:  Coal on the high bridge
Description:  An eastbound coal train crosses the Portage bridge as seen from the falls below in Letchworth State Park. This is the highest bridge on the Conrail system at 240 feet above the Genesee River. It was built by the Erie in 1875 after a previous wooden bridge burned. As I write this in February 2015, its still in service at 140 years old. NS plans to replace it with a new bridge just to the south of the present structure. At one time, the Pennsys Rochester Branch ran up through the gorge. Some of the right of way can still be seen if you know where to look, and bridge piers can be seen in the river from the NY 436 bridge at Portageville. That line was abandoned in 1962.

Description:  This was taken from the access road to Letchworth State Park-you can drive right by the gate in the off season-showing the road overpass as well as the main bridge. At the time, it was the highest bridge on the Conrail system. It is not so now that NS owns it; they have at least one on the Rathole in Kentucky that is 300 feet.
