Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5394, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during July of 1924 and retired in December of 1954 after 30 years of faithful service. Here is an original photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the Long Island Rail Road's Passenger Station in Mineola, New York, on 12 September 1934. Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #3158, an E-3SD (4-4-2) "Atlantic" built in Juniata as an E-2D in 1906, rebuilt as an E-3SD in April of 1913, and retired in March of 1937 after 31 years of faithful service. Here is page 25 of a 34-page article (in five installments) entitled "Locomotives Of The Pennsylvania." It was published originally in the September 1941 issue of "Railroad" magazine, page 95. Photo Caption: "Number 3378 was recently transfered to the Long Island Rail Road. Here she's shown hauling the 'Hampton Express' at speed, near Mineola." #3378 is a K-2S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata as a K-2 during July of 1911, rebuilt as a K-2S in February of 1914, and transfered to the LIRR in November of 1938.

Here is a print via John Krause of Pennsylvania Railroad engine #3738, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during March of 1920 and retired in April of 1950 after 30 years of faithful service. Wave to the Fireman! The electrified third-rail setup pictured here leads me to believe that this is Long Island Rail Road territory. Nice wintry photo of an express baggage car. Date and location are unknown. Just recently found this photo in the booklet, Electric Heritage of the Long Island Rail Road 1905-1975" by Ron Ziel. In the caption imentioned that this was a pre-Christmas special handling mail and parcels. The special consisting of an MPB-54 car and an MPBM-54 car. The photo is by Frank Zahn.

Here is page four of a five-page article by David P. Morgan entitled "Long Island: Which Plan D'ya Read?" It was published originally in the December 1952 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 29. Photo Caption: "Long Island dieselization, begun by the Pennsy, has been pushed by trustees. All nonelectric passenger trains, including this Queens-bound run at Mineola, N.Y., are now diesel powered." Photo by John T. Flood.

Stopped at the Mineola station, this 1955 Alco built RS3 has a respectable passenger train of 6 cars. Based on the poster on the platform advertising the British movie "Rattle of a Simple Man", it must be the fall of 1964-65 so the date is approximate. This is an excellent example of a typical commuter action shot from the 1960's by photographer John Krause.

Here is a postal card that could be entitled "Nassau Interlocking." No Postmark. Caption On Reverse: "Orange and gray Long Island Rail Road C420 #211 is passing Nassau Tower in Mineola, New York. The tower controls the junction with the Oyster Bay branch. Kodachrome by Bill Myers." #211 is a C420 built by the American Locomotive Company in April of 1964 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. In this context, it's powering a six-car passenger train.

Sharp looking "doodlebug" reborn as a MOW car. Built in 11/1925 by the St Louis Car Co as a passenger doodlebug for the Lehigh Valley RR, it eventually was purchased and rebuilt as this MOW car. Still sporting its grill in front and solid color places the date somewhere from the 1960's up to the 1980's when a newer model was introduced. No photographer or location listed. With Mike Woodruff's help on another photo like this one, I have set the location tentatively as Mineola, NY.
