ATSF 4-6-2 #3504 - Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe |
| Description: |
The photo is a sad one of ATSF #3504 with tender #1320 sitting in the dead/scrap line in the Albuquerque Yard. This locomotive was built by Baldwin in February of 1914 originally as a 4-cylinder balanced compound Pacific type locomotive but was later converted to a simple arrangement in November, 1921 at the Topeka Shops. The loco served for nearly 35 years before being sold for scrap to Luria Brothers Company on 11/17/1949. Note that in this photo the loco has tender #1320 - not sure why. An unnknown photographer took this photo while it sat near the end of its life. |

The Super Chief at Albuquerque |
| Description: |
Amtrak's no.3, the Super Chief, slows to a stop at New Mexico's biggest city in July 1973. The SDP40Fs were still brand new- having been delivered only the preceeding month. 18 cars trail; a collection of former Santa Fe Hi-Levels and what would later be called "Heritage" cars from UP, ATSF and SP. As replacements for the motley collection of Es and Fs that Amtrak had started with the SDP40Fs were viewed by most as a sign that Amtrak was off on the right foot. Few, if any, could've forseen their coming problems and the black cloud they were retired under only a few years later. |

| Description: |
ATSF SD24 4575 was 13 years old when this picture was taken at Albuquerque in 1973. The unit was in remote-control helper service north to Raton at the time and is shown here coupled to a U23C and r/c car for that work. It would be rebuilt by the company a year later into an "SD26", which would give it a dozen more years of service before being sold to the Springfield Terminal as their 645. |
