TP ferry Gouldsboro 1938. |
| Description: |
Texas & Pacific rail ferry SS Gouldsboro operated in New Orleans, connecting their station at Annunciation and Race streets with their rail terminus on the west back at Gouldsboro yard in Algiers. For 60 years, from 1882 until 1942, the Texas & Pacific relied on ferries to carry freight and passengers between Algiers on the west bank of the Mississippi River and New Orleans. The Gouldsboro was originally built as an ironclad Union gunboat called the Chickasaw, which fought at the battle of Mobile Bay. After the war it was rebuilt as a car ferry and placed in service by the New Orleans Pacific (later the T&P) in February 1882. |

NOPSI 1017 |
| Description: |
Five months before the U.S. entered WWII, St. Claude Line car 1017 was stopped on North Rampart Street at Canal Street in New Orleans, waiting to "change ends" and head back downriver to St. Bernard Parish. The Rubenstein's store on the right was in the Saenger Theater building, across Canal Street from the Loew's. New Orleans Public Service Inc. 1000-1019 were built in 1928, and were the last cars purchased by NOPSI. Unlike the earlier cars 800-972, these had smaller wheels (26 vs. 33-inch) and four 35 HP motors instead of two 65 HP. These cars spent most of their lives on the St. Claude Line, which ended at the American Sugar refinery in Chalmette, and were all scrapped in 1949 after being replaced by buses. (approximate day) |

GM&O REBEL |
| Description: |
Here is a much-used publicity photo of the Gulf Mobile & Ohio REBEL on the median of North Rampart Street, just outside of the Southern Railway’s TERMINAL STATION in New Orleans. The photo is undated, but we know it was taken between 1940, when the GM&O was formed, and 1947, when the railroad adopted the Alton Railroad’s red-and-maroon paint scheme, because the train was still wearing its original red-and-silver colors. The REBEL was discontinued between New Orleans and Slidell on 8 March 1954, and TERMINAL STATION was closed on 16 April, when New Orleans Union passenger terminal was placed into full operation. Louisiana Southern 501 |
| Description: |
Louisiana Southern 501 was a 44-ton locomotive built by General Electric in December 1941. Most GE locomotives of this design weighed 45 tons, but the railroad specified that the 501 only weigh 44 tons to insure that it could be operated without a fireman. It cost $24,150, was eventually sold to the Pacolet Manufacturing Co. at Pacolet, SC and later went to Willamette Industries at Taylor, LA. (approximate date) |

The Louisville & Nashville‘s HUMMINGBIRD was awaiting its departure from the railroad’s JULIA STREET YARD in New Orleans. The cars had been turned on the wye at GENTILLY YARD and serviced during their layover in the Crescent City. This was one of four sets of equipment built by American Car & Foundry between September and November 1946 for this train and the GEORGIAN. E7A 759 had been built in April 1945 as the 459A and was one of eight units delivered in this blue-and-aluminum paint scheme to match the new cars, but the engines and cars were repainted into standard blue L&N paint scheme beginning in 1950. The photograph was taken from Julia Street and the building on the left was the yard office. |

| Description: |
Louisville & Nashville train 34 – the northbound PIEDMONT – was preparing to leave New Orleans for New York City. The locomotives were E6A units 776 and 756; they had recently been renumbered from 456B and 456A but were still operating as a matched pair. At the other end of the station was a pedestrian overpass which ran from the end of the Canal Street streetcar line to the Mississippi River ferry boat landing on the left. It passed over the tracks of the L&N, Southern Pacific and New Orleans Public Belt. In 1950 the station was the site of the opening scene of the move A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE. |

| Description: |
New Orleans Public Service Inc. cars were gathered at the foot of Canal Street, near the Mississippi River, awaiting their turn to depart. TULANE line car 410 was one of 50 cars built by the Southern Car Co. in 1915 for a predecessor of NOPSI. It had a CAR HOUSE sign up, and would be retired the next year; while CEMETERIES car 873 was built by Brill in 1922. Notice the clever "194-7UP" ad on the 410, while car 873 was promoting rival Royal Crown Cola. |

NOPSI 1008 |
| Description: |
New Orleans Public Service ST. CLAUDE LINE car 1008 was on North Rampart Street at Conti on the line’s last day of streetcar operation. This was one of 20 cars which arrived in 1926, and they were the last streetcars purchased by NOPSI. Unlike most of NOPSI’s cars – which only had two motors – cars 1000-1019 had four. These cars were used on several lines until April 1935 when they were assigned exclusively to the ST. CLAUDE LINE, and all 20 were scrapped soon after they were replaced by buses on the day after this photo was taken. Mossy Oldsmobile was at 420 North Rampart from 1934 until 1956, when it moved to 1331 South Broad Street |
