CB&Q 2-6-0 Class H-3 1114 |
| Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-6-0 Class H-3 1114 at Aurora, Illinois sometime in October 1898, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive was built (or rebuilt) by the Aurora Shops of the CB&Q, the date on the cylinders is 10-98. The class is clearly stenciled on the cab as H-3, however, this conflicts with the information provided in the book, "Steam Locomotives of the Burlington Route", by Bernard G. Corbin and William F. Kerka. The book states that number 1114 was built at Aurora as a Class H-2 in 1898, was renumbered in 1904 to 1169 and retired in July 1929. The book also states that there were seven H-3's built at Aurora in 1899, equipped with piston valves, and this locomotive is clearly equipped with slide valves. There is a reference to a locomotive number 1114 built by Rhode Island as a class H-1 with the following note: "No. 1114 and 1115 do not appear on the 1904 list but do appear on later lists. There is no data on these engines on the records." Another note in the book states, "CB&Q No. 211 and 364 were built as Class H-2 with Richmond compound cylinders. These engines were later changed to Class H-1, probably when simplified." This might be a Mellin design cross-compound locomotive as the word RICHMOND appears on the cylinders. |

CB&Q 2-6-0 Class H-3 1114 |
| Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-6-0 Class H-3 cylinder detail at Aurora, Illinois on an unknown day in October 1898, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. This shows the cylinder and markings on CB&Q H-3 1114. The plate on the steam valve chest says: 20 1/2 32 1/2 H 24 AURORA 10-98. Below that the word RICHMOND is cast into the item between the valve and piston. This is possibly a cross-compound cylinder, purchased from Richmond and installed by the CB&Q on a class H-1 or H-2. Note the flatted sides of the cylinder head covers and the cutout on the front cover. There is mention in the book, "The American Locomotive Company, A Centennial Remembrance", by Richard T. Steinbrenner, stating, "The Tramp's (Richmond's demonstrator 4-6-0) tour ultimately resulted in orders totaling 150 Mellin compounds for Richmond in the period of 1895-1901. The largest individual customers were the Wabash and Canadian Pacific, with 43 and 38 respectively. In addition to the compounds built at Richmond (Virginia), the Works sold cylinder and valve sets to the N&W and Big Four (New York Central System) for their own compound conversions." A side note here, the name Mellin refers to Carl J. Mellin, the General Manager of Richmond Locomotive Works. While at Richmond, Mr. Mellin was in charge of the design of the machinery for the USS Texas because of his background in steamships, gained at the shipyards in Scotland. While on the USS Texas assignment, he adapted his compound marine engine designs for locomotive applications. |

CB&Q 4-4-0 Class A-2 155 |
| Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-4-0 Class A-2 155, date, location and photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. Fortunately, there is only one 4-4-0 number 155 lisxed in the book, Steam Locomotives Of The Burlington Route, by Bernard G. Corbin and Richard F. Kerka. Number 155 was built in the CB&Q shops (not sure which shops) in 1882 as Atlantic type CB&Q 155, renumbzred to 1155 around 1898, renumbered again in 1904 to CB&Q 271, retired in 1910. |

CBQ 4-6-4 #4001, "Aeolus" - Chicago, Burlington & quincy |
| Description: |
Built by the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy's own West Burlington Shops in 1938, this sleek, streamlined 4-6-4 #4001 named Aeolus after the Greek god (translated "Keeper of the Winds") was an immediate hit. In this photo, CBQ 4-6-4 #4001heads up the articulated "Twin City Zephyr" which ran from Chicago to the twin cities of Minneapolis & St Paul. Unfortunately, the stainless steel shrouds caused maintenance problems and were eventually removed in 1941-42. Sadly, this locomotive was retired and sold for scrap in October 1960. No exact day in 1939 was given and no photographer was listed. |

CB&Q 4-4-0 Class A-2 440 |
| Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-4-0 Class A-2 440 at Aurora, Illinois on an unknown day in October 1940 ( 18, 19, or 20 ), photographer unknown. The following is excerpted from Burlington Route Historical Society Bulletin 45, entitled "Modern Americans", edited by Hol Wagner: Number 440 was built by Hinckley Locomotive Works in December 1883 ( c/n 1657 ) as CB&Q 445, becoming Burlington & Missouri River Railroad number 156 in 1886. In 1904 it was renumbered to CB&Q Class A-2 324. In July 1916 it was rebuilt at Havelock and renumbered 440. In July 1926, it was sold for $3,000.00 to Pete Hedgpeth as Rock Port Langdon & Northern 440 and fitted with a slopeback tender from a Kansas City Terminal switcher. In 1940, the Burlington celebrated their 90th Anniversary. As it happened, Number 35 ( Burlington's exhibition 4-4-0 ) was at the New York World's Fair, which the Q did not wish to disturb. So the 440 was borrowed from the RPL&N, fitted with a diamond stack and long cow catcher at the Saint Joseph, Missouri shops, and a rectangular tender from a retired A-2 ( the original had rusted out ), and sent on tour of Lines East locations as B&MR 156 ( notably, Lincoln and Council Bluffs ), but for the appearance at Aurora it was repainted to CB&Q 440. When it exhibition duties were finished, the 440 was returned to the RPL&N and reunited with the slopeback tender. The 440 made its last trip on the RPL&N on November 11, 1945 after that road suffered two track washouts. The assets of the RPL&N were sold off, and the 440 was scrapped in the summer of 1953. |

CBQ 2-8-2 #4960 - Chicago, Burlington & Quincy |
| Description: |
Another nice example of a 1923 Baldwin built Mikado. Note the fireman standing on the tender platform to the far right checking out the coal load. Not much information came with this slide other than the photographer's name, Glenn N. Pizer. From the double decker commuter cars in the background, I am guessing Chicago as the location but with Bob Campbell's help (see comment below), I now know it's Aurora, IL. Specifics - class O-1A, 64" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, engine weight of 316,780, tractive effort of 58,092 lb. Thankfully, this locomotive is now part of the Grand Canyon Railway. The date is an arbitrary one. Glenn N. Pizer photo |

| Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 westbound at Aurora, Illinois on July 4, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. I didn't have enough sense to save the flyer from this trip, so I don't know the destination. The consist was: 4960, C&S auxiliary tender 99518, CB&Q mill gondola 197193, a heavyweight coach, a heavyweight diner, three bi-level commuter coaches, a 7300 series single level coach/power car, another heavyweight coach, and another mill gondola. As I recall, safety railings were welded to the diaphrams of the heavyweight coaches to permit safe passage from the gondolas to the rest of the train. |

Once upon a time, you could ride behind a coal burning steam locomotive, and not complain because you got a cinder in the eye. Most of the gentlemen in the gondola are wearing goggles, and from personal experience, I can attest that this was required eyewear for a fantrip like this. You were also shampooing cinders out of your scalp fo the next few days if you didn't wear a hat. |
